Beauty Spotlight: Cornelia Guest

By Delia von Neuschatz

Cornelia Guest — daughter of Winston Guest, a polo-playing cousin of Winston Churchill, and C.Z. Guest, one of Truman Capote’s “social swans” — does not rest on her blue blood laurels. Yes, the former Debutante of the Decade can boast of having the Duke and Duchess of Windsor as her godparents, of being painted by Andy Warhol, and of dancing with Truman Capote at her coming-out-ball, but this 51-year-old is far too busy for that.

When she is not advocating for animal welfare, taking acting classes, writing beautiful coffee table books, running her catering company or baking vegan cookies (the sale of which helps benefit the Humane Society and which you can order here), she is designing a faux fur collection which will debut next year. So how does this actress/entrepreneur/activist/author stay smooth-skinned and energetic? Well, here's how — straight from the horse (lover's) mouth ...

Skin Care

I love Evan Healy. Their oils are great. Everything is organic. I use the Pomegranate Repair Serum and the Sea Algae Serum. I believe that your skin is a reflection of what you put in your body so I only like to use natural products on my face.

I also really like Cecilia Wong’s line. I’m currently using her Black Current Eye Cream and her Vitamin C cleanser. For my body, I like to moisturize with any organic coconut oil.

MAC Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm.   Giorgio Armani Maestro foundation.
I love MAC lipsticks – the colors, especially the reds and the neutrals – and the way they go on, their texture. I also really like the reds from Tom Ford. For eyes, I’m partial to Bobbi Brown eyeshadows and I love Jane Iredale’s mascaras and her Extender.  I also like the Volume mascara from Dr. Hauschka.

Again, I use oils. I buy them from a store in Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard called Objets d’Art & Spirit. The floral scents are my favorites, especially the Tuberose, Jasmine, and Diana oils. My father always gave me tuberose flowers when I was little. He loved them too.

Hair Care

The John Masters Organics line is a favorite of mine for its natural products. I love their Lavender Rosemary and Honey & Hibiscus shampoos. Their Lavender Avocado conditioner is good, too.

I also really like the natural hair care products from the Italian brand Davines, especially their NaturalTech range. I’m also a fan of Philip B. I love their Peppermint & Avocado shampoo and their Restorative Detangling Toning Mist, which has apple cider in it.

Basically, you can’t go wrong with any of these three lines.
1. John Masters Organics Lavender Rosemary Shampoo; 2. Philip B. Peppermint & Avocado Volumizing and Clarifying Shampoo; 3. John Masters Organics Honey & Hibiscus Hair Reconstructing Shampoo; 4. Philip B. pH Restorative Detangling Toning Mist; John Masters Organics Lavender & Avocado Intensive Conditioner.
Nutrition and Fitness

The more raw the food, the better it is for me. I try to have my diet be as vegan as possible. I eat a lot of salad and a lot of fruit. I always start the day with fresh juice. I love raw walnuts, cashews and raw chocolate. A favorite brand is Fine & Raw.
As for fitness, I have to move every day and I always start my day with pilates or yoga. For pilates, I go to Alexandra Fahrni on East 70th Street. I’ve never met anybody who has a command of the body like Alexandra. Plus, she has the best body I’ve ever seen and she’s in her late 60s. [Alexandra can be reached at and at 212-472-7126.]

I love yoga too. I either take a class or exercise to different tapes. I can pretty much give myself a good workout in 45 minutes of doing yoga. I’ve learned over the years that my body doesn’t like hard exercise. It doesn’t make me feel good. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to listen to my body. But, it’s important for everyone to keep moving.

It’s also important to take some time out every day and let it all go for 10 - 20 minutes.  It can be meditation or it can be something else as long as you can chill for a bit. You have to do what you like to do.

Other Services

Once a week, I head to Cecilia Wong’s salon for her lymphatic drainage electrical stimulation facials. They are fabulous. Everyone that I’ve sent there loves it.
Cornelia shares her 5th Avenue apartment with Cash, a Landseer Newfoundland and Olive, a West Highland Terrier.
Cornelia with Love, her adopted Great Pyrenees, one of her many beloved pets. "I've always loved animals. I've always been surrounded by them."
Expert tip: I use a hot damp cloth on my face before applying oil which helps my skin absorb the product.
