Cellfina: A game changer for cellulite

Yoon Soo Cindy Bae, M.D. is a board certified dermatologist and clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the NYU School of Medicine. “Anyone over the age of 18 who has cellulite is a candidate for Cellfina as long as they are not pregnant or breastfeeding,” informs Dr. Bae.

Dreaded cellulite does not discriminate, plaguing the young and old, the thin and not-so-thin, the fit and not-so-fit alike. Indeed, 80% of women over the age of 20 are afflicted with a cottage cheese appearance on their backsides. The culprits are lifestyle, age and genetics. There have been many products and all manner of procedures over the years pledging to deliver smooth derrieres, but most fall short of their promises or deliver only temporary results. There has been no long term solution to this obstinate problem ... until now that is.

“It changes people’s confidence. Patients of all ages love it,” says Dr. Yoon Soo Cindy Bae of the new cellulite breakthrough, Cellfina. Minimally invasive, the Cellfina System is the only procedure cleared by the FDA specifically for cellulite (as opposed to fat). Currently, there are only a handful of medical practices that offer it in NYC. One of them is Dr. Bae’s office, the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York.

So how does it work? The dimpled appearance of cellulite is caused by fibrous bands (septae) that connect skin to the underlying tissue. The innovative technology in Cellfina goes to the root of the problem by selectively releasing these bands. It does so with the use of microblades which are inserted just beneath the skin through very small incisions and then moved in a fanning motion, detaching the septae from the skin. Clinical trials showed a 94% satisfaction rate after 12 months.
Cellfina is a one-and-done in-office procedure which lasts about an hour to an hour and a half. The targeted areas are marked and pulled taught by means of a suction device. They are then numbed and the microblades are set to work. It is not painful according to Dr. Bae, and the results are visible immediately. While there is very little down time with many individuals being able to engage in normal activity the same day, patients can expect some swelling and bruising which can last for a week up to a month.
The targeted areas are marked and then ...
... after the skin is pulled taut, a very thin blade breaks up the connective fibers of the skin.

How long do the results last? Clinical trials were conducted for one year, but the release of the connective fibers is permanent. So ostensibly, results could be permanent. Stay tuned, for multiple trials to determine the longevity of treatment effects are currently ongoing.

Ulthera Inc. owners of Cellfina, are no doubt pleased with the reception of their new technology because although it is FDA-cleared for treating cellulite on the buttocks and thighs, some doctors are using it off label in other areas of the body to eliminate cellulite or as an adjunct to liposuction or other body contouring procedures. And it’s not just women who are availing themselves of this breakthrough. Dr. Bae reports that men too have been coming to her office seeking treatment.

How much will this leap forward set you back, you ask? A pretty penny to be sure. Cost depends on the number of dimples and usually ranges between $4,000 - $6,000 dollars. One session, however, is all that’s required. The price of a large leather Fendi peekaboo tote bag? $4,700. Feeling confident in a pair of Daisy Dukes? Priceless.

Don’t want to dig that deep into your wallet, but haven’t given up on a dimpled derriere? Our beauty experts at NYSD recommend the following appearance enhancing products:
The Heaven Firming & Stretch Mark Oil deeply moisturizes and firms skin breaking down cellulite and increasing collagen production. The Mio Activist Firming Active Body Oil mega-moisturizes and strengthens skin with its mix of vitality-boosting vitamins, nourishing omegas and free-radical fighting antioxidants.
The travel-sized Strong is the New Skinny kit from Mio comes with a scrub to be applied on dry skin, a rich body cream and an oil which, when used in combination, will smooth and brighten uneven skin tone, improving the skin’s overall tone and strength, leaving it fit and glowing.
Expert tip: Travel Beauty expert Claire McCormack likes to administer a deep self-massage as she applies the above products: “I'll mix the cream and the oil and massage it in with my knuckles on my thighs and bum. You have to be rough with cellulite to break it up!” Dry brushing is something else she recommends because, as with massage, it facilitates lymphatic drainage.
