Clémence von Mueffling: A French beauty expert’s advice

"I felt that magazines are oriented towards young readers and I wanted to include women of all ages," says Clémence von Mueffling of her website, Beauty and Well Being, which has 15 contributors of all ages reporting from around the world including Paris, New York, Geneva, London, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Beauty industry veteran, Clémence von Mueffling, knows her métier. Not only did both her mother and grandmother work as beauty editors at French Vogue, but this Paris native has experienced the business from multiple angles. There are the years she spent in marketing and communications at cosmetic giants such as Clarins and Dior and also the time she put in as a beauty editor herself at a lifestyle magazine.

More recently, in a bid to fill a perceived void in the publishing world, the mother of six year-old twins launched the cultishly popular website, Beauty and Well Being, through which she aims to cater to women of all ages. With a preference for non-toxic ingredients and natural products, the decade-long NYC resident reveals her balanced approach to health and grooming.
Clémence's mother and grandmother were both beauty editors at French Vogue. Their combined careers spanned the 1950 – 1990s.
Skin Care
I drink a lot of water and I always clean my face with a toner – either by La Roche Posay or Filorga. They don't leave you with a dry feeling. Then, I add moisturizer. I change moisturizers according to the season. Right now, I'm using Filorga's Time Filler Absolute Wrinkle Correction Cream. It preps the skin perfectly for makeup. I always apply moisturizer on the neck and décolleté too. Around the eyes, I like Eclat du Regard by Embryolisse. It's very refreshing.

Makeup
I love Terry de Gunzburg's products. Terry is the creator of the famous Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat highlighting pen. When Saint Laurent retired, she left to start her own brand, By Terry. She creates makeup that gives a glow. It's incredible. It really works. In the summer, I use her Soleil Terrybly tinted serum as a foundation for a bit of sheer coverage. If I'm heading into a meeting I'll add more coverage with her Touche Veloutée Highlighting Concealer.

For evenings, I bring things to a more sophisticated level by using Yves Saint Laurent's Touche Éclat Strobing Light Megahighlighter. To add color to my cheeks, I dust on Charlotte Tilbury's Filmstar Bronze & Glow powder. It is ideal for both day and for a more glamorous evening look.

My mascara is Baby Doll by YSL. It's the only one that gives volume and length without clumping. It's also easy to remove.

In general, when it comes to grooming products, I like to make natural choices. For instance, my deodorant is by Agent Nateur. It is totally natural and it really works. I also like the deodorants from Credo. For a body cream, I'll use something from La Roche Posay, Avène or Juara.

Kure Bazaar is the only brand of nail polish that I use. It's a non-toxic line with 85% natural ingredients in it.

Hair Care
My shampoo is from Rahua. Rahua is a great all-natural brand. Their shampoo does not have a lot of the chemicals you'll find in other brands.

I get my hair done at Julien Farel. Miguel cuts it and Dawn blow dries it. I don't get my hair colored, but when I need to touch up some greys, I use the natural mineral powder from Color Wow.

Diet and Fitness
I train with Katherine Greiner of KG Body once a week. She follows the Tracy Anderson method. She used to be one of her students. She knows so much about wellness in general – about food, yoga, breathing, meditation. I find it very inspiring.

Twice a week, I do pilates with Erika Bloom whom I also find very inspiring. I love her studio. It's very quiet with lots of natural light. The trainers are incredibly professional. And once a week, I also swim. I find that to have the discipline of a routine is key.

I follow a healthy diet. I'm all for a balanced lifestyle. I love sweets, but I stay away from fried foods and I eat a minimum of processed foods.

Other Services
For facials, I go to Carmel O'Neill at the Renew Spa. She is amazing because again, she is a woman who knows about a healthy lifestyle. It's not just about putting on some creams. She has the discipline to be healthy and is not just about one thing.

Once a month, I get the 25-minute Petit Facial at Caudalie with Daphne. I also get the body lymphatic drainage there. Isabelle Bellis does great facials too.

For manicures and pedicures, I see Ludmilla at the John Barrett salon at Bergdorf Goodman. It's as close as I could find in New York to what I had in Paris. Twice a year, Parisian women see a podologue who provides borderline medical pedicures, leaving your feet impeccable – like baby feet.

About 50% of the time, I do my own nails. I'm used to it as in Paris, they don't have nail salons like they do here.

And before an event, I'll call on Glamsquad. They do a great job at reasonable prices.

Expert tip: “Avoid harsh scrubs and peels,” says Clémence. “I was taught by a skin care expert in Paris that they make your skin much more sensitive and prone to rosacea. Fair skin has 12 layers and every time you scrub, you remove three layers. It takes 48 hours to re-build one layer. We only have one face. It’s better to clean, moisturize and do facial massage. I feel it improves elasticity and helps skin create its own collagen.”
