Have you ever “googled” yourself? No, no … get your minds out of the gutter!! Although that is a kind of fun way of describing “it.” I mean, put your name into the Google site and see what comes up?

THE SEARCH FOR MR. ADEQUATE
Part 68

By Susan Silver

I was playing around on the Internet, yes life is that boring sometimes … and I decided to “google” myself and see what came up. And I’m glad I did. I recommend it to you. Just to clear up any mistakes, which is what I found.

It seems there are some other Susan Silvers … imagine that! Actually I knew of one who has a wonderful antique store in upstate New York. I’ve met her and actually apologized to her.

Years ago, I was a Dewar’s Profile … one of those ads that were done profiling supposed people of interest who supposedly drank Dewars. (Which I did after they delivered five cases!) Anyway, after that appeared, some nutjob started calling and breathing heavily. Only, he called her, as I was unlisted. And thank god!

So getting back to the point at hand … when I googled myself, there were about four others with a few articles in addition to the ones about me.

Let me clarify for everyone … I AM NOT THE SCIENTOLOGIST!

I am also, not the rock and roller/possible lesbian. Though to quote Seinfeld … ”there’s nothing wrong with that.” I am also not the Room Organizer. Just come and look at my office and you will see that.

I wrote the Google Editor to try and separate out some of the credits that crept into my bio … and hope they fix it. I do not believe, as some do, that any publicity is better than none. So just to repeat … I do not know Tom and Katy … and I do believe in psychiatry. Believe in it? Hell, I worship it.

Next topic of interest … I hope

This week’s New York Times Wedding/Engagement notes were wonderful.

I usually just skim them to see how many people of my age actually can get married, but this time I was captivated by a lot of the younger couples. Although many people are not getting married until their 30’s which I think is wise.

First of all, there were some very attractive ones. And some looked alike. Already! There is a theory among behavioral scientists that we choose people we see ourselves in. There is also a prevalent theory that we choose people because of their smell. I believe that. (I used to follow guys on the street if they wore Paco Rabanne. Not exactly the pheromones in the theory but it worked for me.)

The most salient feature I noticed in this week’s article was that they are engaged in very interesting careers. Lots of lawyers of course, and most of them the women (yay!) but too, a doctor of classical studies, a doctorate in chemical engineering, and a real doctor … sorry, a neurologist. A student in diplomacy was marrying, a ton of cum laude grads, and some married up to summa’s … lots of financial people, some editorial types. Very nice, these two career couples … and at least they will be able to afford it.

And then there was a long profile about a couple who are emulating Star Jones. That is to say, they wanted a huge extravaganza at a baseball stadium yet! And since they couldn’t afford it, no one but a Trump could … and who else would want to … they merchandized it.

They sold sponsorships for everything from the stadium to the dress and bobble-head dolls (bride and groom dolls of course.) The term “bobble-head” seems to certainly fit in this case.

The paper said that these days weddings average around $28,000 although not in New York. Yeahhhh. This one was $100,000 and it was her second! Can we say “oh oh” together?

Next law firms will sponsor divorces!

The bathroom et al …

From emails, I see that this has struck a chord in Dear Readers who have/are suffering the same catastrophe. But the noise and dust have ended, all of the things I ordered have arrived and are even better than expected. You can really get a lot on the Internet these days in addition to your own Google.

The tile is in and looks really neat … sort of cloudy peach. The lattice work is being done, the plumber is plumbing as I write this. And so far, so good.

Father’s Day

This weekend is Father’s Day … and sadly my Daddy is no longer alive. I miss him and think about him almost everyday. I was one of the lucky ones to have had him until the age of 91. I was also the lucky one as a child … as he was an older father and spent more time with me than most of my friends’ dads did. And of course being an only child was a plus in that way, at least.

He truly gave me unconditional love. I always joked that if I’d killed someone, he’d say, “well they must have deserved it.” He was a brilliant writer and self taught pianist and very witty. He had a gift for art and one of my treasures is a little sketch he’d drawn of me as a child. He used to always tell me bedtime stories and encouraged my imagination. Plus he taught me croquet!

I am dreaming of him a lot these days. Rare to have, that unconditional love the first time … and really hard to find again. Yes, yes … aha moment.

Those of you who are lucky enough to still have your Dads … give them a hug (as well as the tie) and tell them you love them.

See you … I’m off to the Hamptons. The Search resumes!!
