What to Wear Where: 31st Annual Miracle on Madison

Karen & Hilary walking Madison Avenue.
by Karen Klopp & Hilary Dick

To get into the the true spirit of the holidays, head to Madison Avenue
this Saturday, December 2nd, for the 31st Annual Miracle on Madison. It is seasonal festivity at its finest, and with some of the proceeds going to The Society Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, your thoughtful purchases will be helping Pediatric Initiatives.  After all, the holidays are all about children and acts of kindness. With carolers, festive face painters, Caring Canines and bushels of balloons, it is the kick-off to a spectacular day of shopping.

Grab some friends and family and do a Madison Avenue Stroll between 57th and 86th Streets.
Jamee Gregory, President of The Society, says it best: “Please tell everyone to save their holiday shopping for Dec 2nd, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. We will have a wonderful time together! The Society will have carolers, face-painters, a photo-booth, our Caring Canines, and many surprises!  We’ll be wearing bright red mufflers and and participating shops will be decorated with red balloons! There will be friends, fun, and surprises. Madison Avenue will feel like a neighborhood fair and everyone can participate, benefiting MSK’s patients at the same time. This will be a win-win day! Please come! We need a terrific turnout.”

And so stroll, we shall! 20% of all of the sales will be donated to The Society, up to a maximum of $15,000. The funds go a long way to helping ensure the wellbeing of patients; raise funds for cancer research and treatment; and provide public education on the prevention, early detection and treatment for cancer.

Hilary has been involved with The Society for a very long time and has shared on What2WearWhere.com her Miracle on Madison shopping list. It is so easy to check off items for everyone on your list during this festive stroll.   But today we are shopping the generous shops on Madison for What to Wear to the event.

I decided to check out Veronica Beard for some casual pieces that are chic but comfortable. I was first drawn to this fabulous Voyager coat — a piece like this makes an instant statement. Paired with jeans and a fun bootie, like these silver ones, you have a ready-made outfit. A cross body bag is always a good idea when shopping to keep your hands free. And I couldn’t resist these cute fluffy owl mittens to keep those hands warm. Throw a bright scarf around your neck, grab a pair of chic sunnies, and you are ready to hit the shops ...

For me the landmark Ralph Lauren Flagship is a perfectly interesting place to start shopping. Officially known as the Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo House, it is a French Renaissance revival mansion modeled after a châteaux of the Loire Valley in France.  The venerated manse suffered an unhappy start as Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo was widowed as a newlywed and never moved in. A period of decline decay followed.
Years later Ralph Lauren was able to purchase it for his flagship and filled it with the eclectic and elegant furnishings that the stunning mansion deserved. And his eclectic and elegant following poured through its doors.
The women's store came later when Ralph Lauren built the light-filled limestone Beaux Arts Mansion in the classical architecture of a century ago. It is a step back in time where, perhaps, Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo shimmers across Madison after dark, gracefully ascending the grand staircase to exquisite salons filled with sumptuous styles.
Since the weather is variable in early December, I am shopping for versatile layers to mix and match depending on the temperature. For the month of December, I introduce a rich burgundy into which blends so well with black. This selection is made to be mixed and matched and would be just the selection for traveling during the holidays in chilly places. Think London or Paris or even Aspen. The puffer jacket, which is an absolute Must Have for travel, is a steal at $208 (and it comes in three shades). Glamourpuss fur scarf provides additional cozy style and jewelry from Alexis Bittar a bit of bling.

We send our best wishes for a blessed and inspired Holiday Season. If you cannot enjoy Miracle on Madison, please consider a donation to The Society Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
