Shopping Safari: More SoHo

By Jamee Gregory

Even spring rain cannot dampen the fun of a visit to Soho. Try Anna Sui’s boutique with its red floors and purple walls for an instant lift. Frilly blouses, checkered dirndls with daisies and mini-dresses will send your spirits soaring.  A virginal white dress at Rebecca Taylor or her dainty pink and white prints will banish the May mist. If that fails, spend some time at Face Stockholm where friendly make up artists will demonstrate the joys of pale pink lips and blushing cheeks. Who needs sun when some artistry can do the trick?

If the grey sky still makes you feel blue, stop at Pleats Please, Issey Miyake’s fanciful store filled with all the colors in the rainbow, carefully pleated into stretchy tee shirts, billowy blouses, and shapely scarves just waiting to wrap around your wintry body offering new hope.

Want to see something amazing? Visit Lisa Perry’s sensational showroom, where space age design, modern furniture and smashing clothes based on vintage sixties dresses will blow you away. What better way to end the winter than to appear in a brightly colored trapeze dress that’s screams Courreges or a sexy column of an evening dress decorated with quilted red satin lips embellishing the bust line? How about a long black or white gown covered in swirls of brightly colored felt flowers or a swingy two-toned dress with a peek-a-boo hem in fuchsia and pink that Lisa wore to Evelyn Lauder’s Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s Pink Party at the Waldorf? Her outstanding creation stood out, even in a room with thousands of designer-clad guests! Perry’s dazzling creations are on sale at Jeffery’s and well worth the trip.

Why not visit Dinosaur Designs for a quick pick up? Even the most classic turtleneck or Gap tee will benefit from the addition of this Australian shop’s strings of beads in every color. There’s long and chunky, short and sweet, hot pink, coral, turquoise and blue, classic white in cuffs and earrings, too. Will a stack of pearlized pink bracelets do the trick or a bold Lucite bangle shot through with shades of red? Try three different strands of beige in various shapes or go for black and white. Chokers and chains glow like jelly beans, temptation runs rampant. How to decide? It’s never easy once you enter this enchanting space, its mirrored glass cases filled to the brim.
Dinosaur Designs Calypso Jewelry
If you need more affordable jewels, try Calypso’s funky outpost with necklaces from Paris’ trendiest jewelers. You won’t see yourself coming and going with their unique selection. I find silver chains with flowers and ballerinas and enameled charms. I can’t choose, so I buy one for me and one for my daughter. Even their miniature pink-striped hatbox containers are worth the trip downtown. Jump in a cab, shift the scene and experience New York’s ever-changing streets. It beats staying inside on a rainy day. Get ready for May flowers.
