Peter de Savary
Peter de Savary, English entrepreneur, conservationist, yachtsman, and seasonal resident of Newport again hosted a grand charity affair with his wife Lana at their home “Oakwood” last Saturday. Save The Bay was the beneficiary of the second annual Carnegie Ball.

The island lifestyle of the Bahamas was clearly in evidence from the moment guests arrived at the gates of Oakwood. Greeted by customs officials and local Bahamian girls in native dress, participants were immediately swept into a Nassau, Bay Street Marketplace. From cigar rollers, Bahamian chefs preparing conch fritters, bars serving Bacardi island rum specials, to stalls showing off island wear, jewelry, and a bazaar of fantasy auction cruises, trips, and watches the evening certainly started on a high note.

John Graham and Jennifer Mercer
Just as guests were being plied with drinks and canapés The Royal Bahamian Police Force Band, flown in especially for the occasion, sprang into full military stride as they marched in formation down the newly created Bay Street Marketplace. The rousing sounds of this band brought all in attendance to a stand still as they watched the parade of white clad, pith helmeted members performing a mixture of precise marching music and more contemporary jazz & dance numbers.

While barely catching their breath, the 500 guests were then treated to the exotic 50 piece Junkanoo Bahamian group, Colors. These creative musician/dancers went wild throughout the grounds of Oakwood playing island music while dancing in a most festive, fast paced and spirited fashion. They then gathered all of the guests together for a march into the dining tent. While seated, guests were further entertained by a fire eater, magician, and contortionist/limbo dancer.

Just watching all the goings on created quite an appetite and a Royal Bahamian feast was just the answer to the cravings of those in attendance. After a sumptuous repast consisting of Bahamian langouste, grilled filet mignon with shitake mushroom mojo followed by Tahitian vanilla crème brulee and miniature macadamia rum tartlets, things heated up with the live auction.

Presided over by host de Savary, the boundless list of cruises: an afternoon charter on White Hawk (donated by Brian O’Neil), five day sail on Tree of Life (donated by John and Sheri Laramee), trips: to Bovey Castle, The Abaco Club, Cherokee Plantation, Carnegie Abbey (donated by Peter de Savary), a week stay at Il Borro (donated by the Ferragamo family) a three night stay at Nassau’s premier resort, Atlantis (donated by Atlantis), plus rare watches: Tutima Military Watch (donated by John Walsh), Breitling Chronograph (donated by Ray Grenon Jewelers), Jaeger-Le Coultre Reverso (donated by Colombian Emeralds), brandy, and cigars (donated by Bacardi & Greycliff) were auctioned off at top dollar by the supportive audience.

The high bid of $45,000 was reached by a trio of bidders, each receiving a week at Peter de Savary’s new Club in The Bahamas, The Abaco Club on Winding Bay. The most talked about bid centered on the purchase of Ric Hallam’s colorful trousers by an admirer for the outrageous sum of $3,200! When the sand settled, over one hundred thousand dollars had been raised for Save The Bay.

After the auction it was time for everyone to let their hair down and jive to the island music of Bahamian Stone McEwan and his group Thunder and calypso music by Groupo Fantasia. For those looking to cool their jets, twin ice sculpted Bacardi bars were fully stocked with a full array of rum and after dinner drinks as well as Bahamian lager, Kalik. Late night revelers were seen relaxing in the Aqua Bar enjoying the last vestiges of island music and reflecting on a most extraordinary evening of fun and frolic.
