A Compendium of Shops, Their Special Activities and The Holiday Hours

You almost need a Blackberry dedicated to Christmas Shopping, these days, to figure out who’s open when and to find out whether or not your favorite store is open a half hour longer on weekdays, has added Sunday hours and which Sunday/s, or will offer a shopping survival libation when you arrive. While Verdura is serving tea every afternoon and Van Cleef & Arpels is pouring champagne every day, Bergdorf Goodman, for example, has opted for hot chocolate or cookie weekends. Everyone has extended hours of some sort, even if it’s just adding a half hour on busy days, and all of the Carnegie Hill shops are staying open until 9:00pm this weekend, on 12/8, 12/9, and 12/10.

To get the scoop, we started with our own completely subjective list of stores and shops, starting with the four Bs. Since we decided to say uptown, we then combed Madison Avenue and Fifty-Seventh Street, and out of that rather extensive group, those who were able to respond, during this past, amazingly hectic week, are the focus of our very first Christmas shopping database, something we hope will help throughout the holiday season and many more to come. Our goal was to provide a list of hard data about store hours, special events, etc. We couldn’t resist a few illustrations: two ultra-imaginative and glamorous decorative ideas and a few gifts. Here goes ...
