| This past Tuesday night, the Hispanic Society of America held its 2009 Gala at 583 Park Avenue. They honored Fundacion E. Arocena, with acceptance by Eneko Belausteguigoiteia Arocena and Jose Pinto Mazal, Fernando d’Ornellas Silva, Blanca Pons-Sorolla, and Antonio del Valle Ruiz. The Hispanic Society of America is one of New York little known, almost undiscovered gems, probably mainly because of its location – on beautiful Audubon Terrace in upper Manhattan west of Broadway between 155th and 156th Streets.
The Hispanic Society museum collections provide a comprehensive history of the culture of the Iberian Peninsula from the Bronze Age to the present century. This includes its collection of paintings of El Greco, Velasquez and Goya; as well as stone, bronze, ivory and polychrome sculpture. Its library is a preeminent center for research on the history, art and culture of Spain, Portugal and Latin America. It has been a sleeping giant in the world of arts and culture. The supporters of the society, like those honored on Tuesday night are working to provide its re-awakening in the consciousness of people not only here in New York but all over the world; it is a treasure trove undiscovered. |

| The New York Film Festival held a screening of “Precious” last Saturday at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Directed by Lee Daniels with screenplay by Geoffrey Fletcher based on the novel Push by Sapphire, it is the story of an overweight, illiterate teen in Harlem who is pregnant with her second child and is invited to enroll in an alternative school in hopes of turning her life around. I haven’t seen the film yet but I will say that everyone I know who has seen it was so moved that they think it’s the best film they’ve seen in many a moon. |

| The Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem (TYWLS, East Harlem), opened in 1996, was the country’s first single-sex public school to open in more than 30 years. TYWLS has made history and headlines preparing low-income students of color with an outstanding college-prep education, offering a personalized, dynamic, hands-on learning environment where girls can thrive academically. |
