Autumn Celebrations

Dinner in the dramatically uplit West Gallery at The Frick Collection's Autumn Dinner 2009.
Last Wednesday night, Evelyn Lauder, on behalf of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Extell Development Corporation, hosted a gala opening cocktail reception for “Inspired Designs: A Showhouse Celebrating Extraordinary Women” at 535 West End Avenue at 86th, the new Extell building.

The Frick Collection’s annual Autumn Dinner plays a unique role in the social landscape of New York and is a much-anticipated highlight of The Frick’s social and fund-raising calendar. Each year, it attracts those who appreciate the significance of The Frick’s contribution to the life of the city and the greater international cultural community.
The receiving line of Frick Trustee Chairman (and Benefit Chairman) Margot Bogert, Director Anne L. Poulet, Benefit Chairman Agnes Gund, honoree Philippe de Montebello, and Benefit J. Tomilson Hill and Janine Hill.
Guests were able to dine in the newly reinstalled and relit East Gallery among works by El Greco, Goya, Hogarth, Manet, Reynolds and others.
This year’s black-tie dinner honored Philippe de Montebello, the longest serving director in the history of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Oceana, a nonprofit international advocacy organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s oceans, arrived in New York with a splash. Hosts Alexander and Brenda Von Schweickhardt opened their residence to the private event welcoming Jeff Goldblum, Gina Gershon, Sam Waterston, John and Joyce Varvatos, Tommy, Dee, and Ally Hilfiger, music producer Nile Rodgers, Patti D'Arbanville, Nancy Hunt, Lt. The Noguchi Museum hosted a celebration of Priscilla Morgan, an Honorary Life Trustee of the Museum on the occasion of her 90th birthday. Ms. Morgan has been a trustee of the Museum since its inception in 1985. She has played a key role in its growth, from development of its programs and activities to the Museum’s major building projects and renovations. The Museum is located at 3338 10th Street, Long Island City.

150 attended the cocktail reception followed by special performances by pianist Charles Wadsworth and flutist Paula Robison. Museum Trustee Hugh Hardy served as emcee.

Among the guests: Museum Trustees Samuel Sachs II, David D. Holbrook, Diana DiMenna, Donald Elliott, Isaac Shapiro, and Christiane Fischer. The National Design Awards Gala, a program of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, was held last Thursday at Cipriani 42nd Street. The Awards were conceived by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum to honor the best in American Design including architecture, fashion, lifetime achievement, and sustainable design solutions.
More than 575 attended. Presenters included John Waters and John King. Award winners included Francisco Costa, creative director of Calvin Klein Collection and Lincoln Center president Reynold Levy. Lampshades by David Stark.
