Savannah College of Art and Design President Paula S. Wallace was honored with the first ELLE DECOR Vision Award at the inaugural Women In Design event, co-sponsored by ELLE DECOR and the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Held at the Harold Pratt House in New York City, the event celebrated outstanding female achievement in the fields of architecture, communications, fashion, interior and product design.

An academic visionary, Wallace co-founded the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1978. Thirty years later, SCAD is the nation’s most comprehensive art and design university, offering more degree programs and specializations than any other art and design university in the United States. The university’s more than 9,000 students study at campuses in Savannah and Atlanta, Ga., Lacoste, France, and online via SCAD-eLearning.

Wallace has advanced the SCAD legacy of historic preservation and its commitment to renewing urban landscapes through an impressive series of restoration projects in the medieval village of Lacoste, in Midtown Atlanta and in the historic district of Savannah.

Most recently, SCAD restored a 19th-century synagogue, several historic public school buildings, the oldest extant railroad depot in the United States, and a mansion considered to be the oldest, most complete and single most important representation of Atlanta’s storied New South, post-Civil War period—transforming them into thriving homes for SCAD academic programs.

“For some, design is merely decoration, but for women in design, it is so much more—it is essential,” said Margaret Russell, editor-in-chief of ELLE DECOR. “This award is about recognizing women such as Paula who are making their mark in a field historically dominated by men. Paula isn’t just changing the course of the design world, but is helping to change the world itself.”

In addition to the award ceremony, the Women in Design event featured a panel discussion with several leading women in design, including architect Annabelle Selldorf, interior designers Bunny Williams and Celerie Kemble, and fashion designer Cynthia Rowley.

Cookie Magazine and the Urban Zen Foundation held their First Annual “Kidsfest New York” in support of Free Arts NYC. It was held at the Urban Zen Center at the Stephen Weiss Studio on 711 Greenwich Street. Kim Raver of NBC’s “Lipstick Jungle” hosted along with stylist Mary Alice Stephenson.

The Young Leadership Committee at the Jewish Children’s Museum held its Inaugural “Back to School Gala” to benefit the children of today and the leaders of tomorrow. Over 300 young professionals boarded CitySights NY coach buses and headed from Manhattan to the museum, which is located at 792 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn.

Chairman Eric Brody and Vice-Chairs Sam Akselrod, Lillian Antar, Liron Artzi, Nola Weinstein, Erica Zeicher and Coordinators Chaim and Rochi Benjaminson were joined by committee members Beth Brodsky, Rebecca Byanovsky, Ben Ezrick, Jason Garden, Stephanie Hecklin, Carolyn Hecklin, Leah Kastin, Milena Kozhin, Evan Nass, Channing Norton, Elana Osterland, Ezzy Rappaport, Jennifer Rubin, Michelle Schepsman, Nicole Schaffer, Freida Shor, Esther Silber, Ken Solway, Michael Vainstain, Ron Wasserman, Jessica Yakubowicz, Sarah Yazdian, Rachel Yazdian, Dany Zaffran and Ari Zoldan in welcoming a slew of young patrons.

Hip-Hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari, boxer Dimitry Salita, Nancy Spielberg, Shimon Katz, Dr. Marcia Robbins-Wilf and Dr. Perry Robbins, were among those who took tours of the museum, which is the only one of its kind worldwide. The inaugural gala raised over $60,000 to further the JCM’s commitment to children worldwide.

DJ Edge spun for the crowd. The silent auction drew intense competition, with bidders vying for a stay at the W Hotel, a night at the Borgata, beauty goodies and fabulous accessories.

The Jewish Children’s Museum provides exhibitions and programs for children of all faiths and backgrounds in an educational and entertaining format. Through contemporary technology and a hands-on approach to learning, visitors experience Jewish history, values and traditions in a manner that inspires an increased interest in Jewish culture.
