| A group of young professional philanthropists known as “Future of Hope” joined City of Hope’s fight against women’s cancers by hosting a Halloween-themed benefit called 'A Night of Mischief' at Marquee in NYC. Celebrities are joining Future of Hope’s efforts in raising the awareness of City of Hope and its mission to find cures for cancers and other life-threatening diseases.
Lending her clout to the cause was Tinsley Mortimer as she films her new CW reality series Empire State. This new reality show will air this winter chronicling Tinsley’s travels, adventures and causes that include finding a cure for women’s cancers. The CW will be in attendance filming Tinsley and her friends as they join together with New York City’s Future of Hope. The evening will be dedicated in loving memory to Amy Salm who lost her battle with cancer this year. The City of Hope, a National Cancer Institute and Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, is one of the world’s leading research and treatment centers for cancer and other serious diseases, including diabetes and HIV/AIDS. The work conducted at City of Hope is shared with medical centers worldwide, touching the lives of millions of people everywhere, including the New York Metropolitan Area. |

| Thursday a week ago, the ASPCA held its annual Humane Awards Luncheon, sponsored by the Hartville Group at the newly renovated Pierre. This luncheon always recognizes animal heroes that have demonstrated extraordinary efforts, as well as individuals who made a significant impact in the lives of animals during the past year. These are our friends. Writing that last paragraph reminded me of an incident with a family in Los Angeles several years ago involving a barking Jack Russell. If you know Jack Russells, you know they are barkers. The bark, if you’ve been sitting in silence concentrating, comes out like a knfe in the atmosphere and you might suddenly jolt up in alarm. Meanwhile, it’s just the darn dog barking. I’ve had a couple of Jack Russells. They can really bark up a storm. But they know what they were barking for or at. And if you pay attention, you’ll know too. |
| In this Los Angeles story, the dog was running around the house barking non-stop. He’d run up the stairs, up to the third floor, back down, around the house and up again. Within very few minutes, after the owners got over their initial impression that Fido was just barking again, they followed the dog’s path which led directly to the third floor apartment where the elderly mother lived. She had had a heart attack. Bark Sparky, bark on. Jack Russell stories of guarding, protecting, barking are legion and many are very funny because they’re often deadly serious but loving little terriers. This year’s dog of the year at the ASPCA luncheon was Archie, an eight-year-old black Labrador retriever, who serves as an assistance dog and social lifeline for Sergeant Clay Rankin. Sgt. Rankin suffered spinal injuries serving in Iraq. Archie is his primary caregiver and social safety net. The dog’s loyalty and perseverance in helping Sgt. Rankin accomplish his daily tasks has allowed the veteran to regain his confidence and independence and move forward with his life. And I’ll bet Sgt, Rankin is also buoyed by the great sense of love he feels for this loving friend who serves him. When you finally decide you need that love in your life, adopt a dog or a cat. They may save your life. And your heart. |
