David C. Wiener was presented with the Ellen Glesby Cohen Leadership award for his generous and unwavering support of the volunteer-run “Health Care Provider Grant Program which raised $200,000 to assist 460 patients with their health care provider expenses. This program has enabled families to focus on battling the disease, instead of their finances.

An audience comprised of doctors, patients, business professionals and lymphoma advocates listened to an update on developments in research, acceptance speeches and a moving address by lymphoma survivor Elizabeth Cohen whose mantra “I believe in research,” elegantly illustrated the reason behind and importance of the evening’s festivities.

Last Tuesday night in the Boom Boom Room of the Standard, Andre Balazs’ chic and snazzy new hotel in the Meatpacking, there was a celebration of the DVD release of Valentino: The Last Emperor. If you haven’t seen it yet, get yourself a copy. Doesn’t matter if you’re interested in fashion or not. It’s a tribute to pageantry that hasn’t been seen since the Golden Age of Hollywood or Cleopatra’s Entrance into Rome.

Valentino and his partner in business and in life Giancarlo Giammetti were there and wherever they go, the rich, the chic, the shameless, and Madonna are likely to show. And so it’s a party like only it can be a party with that cast of characters playing on their very own stage.

Thanks to Bernie Madoff, the public perception of Palm Beach may still resemble that of dreams dashed to smoldering ashes. But for the tens of thousands who still call this little piece of paradise home, life goes on -- especially among thsoe who didn’t have their millions in “Uncle Bernie’s Fund.”

They were en masse in support of Overtures, the Young Friends of Palm Beach Opera’s 2009-10 “Season of Temptation” kickoff at the hip Omphoy Resort -- the first new hotel to open in Palm Beach in decades.
