Drama; the good kind

This past Monday night, the stars were out to honor the now legendary Angela Lansbury at the Drama League’s 26th annual all-star gala at the Pierre.

“A Musical Celebration of Broadway” brought out Bernadette Peters, Audra McDonald, Victor Garber, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Cheyenne Jackson, Malcolm Gets, Len Cariou, Charles Busch, James Barbour, Will Chase, Christopher Sieber, Donna Murphy, Chita Rivera, Alexaner Gemignani, Dee Hoty, Sarah Rice, Edy Falco, Marian Seldes, Chad Kimball, Beth Fowler, Will Swenson, T. R. Knight.

There were musical selections from “Mame,” “Sweeney Todd,” Beauty and the Beast,” “Anyone Can Whistle,” and “Gypsy.”

Last Friday night at Cipriani 42nd Street, the air was filled with “mystery, magic and intrigue” as HRH Crown Prince Alexander and HRH Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia, TRH Prince Peter, Prince Philip and Prince Alexander of Serbia hosted The Princess Ball Mardi Gras Masquerade Gala.

The night was a whirlwind of razzle dazzle tothe sounds of RIO provided by Anna Maria Tornaghi and her Brazilian connection. Capoeira acrobats and Brazilian dancers inspired the crowd to move and shake. International sensation Donna D’Cruz provided hot beats for part of the evening and had guests including husband, Tom Silverman on the dance floor. Dayana Mendoza, Miss Universe 2008, turned heads in her scarlet gown by up-and-coming Lebanese designer, Jad Ghandour, the two beauties were a force to reckon with. A five-tier cake, specially designed for the party by TLC’s Cake Boss, Buddy Valastro, served as the center piece of the evening. The rainbow-colored cake was cut by the royal family and served with a champagne toast.

Proceeds of the gala benefitted The Lifeline Humanitarian Organization, founded by patron Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia in 1993. Lifeline continues to provide the most desperately needed humanitarian aid for Serbia’s medical facilities, handicapped children and orphans. Serbia has the largest refugee population in Europe. The country is also overwhelmed by both the highest incidence of breast cancer in Europe and the highest infant mortality rate. Lifeline is responsible for providing incubators to neonatal intensive care units throughout the country.

KiDS of NYU Foundation, Inc., sponsored a family bowling party to benefit children’s health services at NYU Langone Medical Center two Sundays ago on January 31st at Chelsea Piers. Kids from toddlers to teens, along with their parents, grandparents and guests, filled the 40 lanes, and also enjoyed roving magicians, face-painting, caricaturists, arts and crafts, and more.

The "bowling bash" was co-chaired by Abigail Scheuer Atema, Lisa Anderson and Barry Goldfeder, Dierdre and Joshua Laterman, Kimberly Pozner, and Jessica and Michael Weaver. The event raised over $100,000.

KiDS' next event, Springfling, will be held on Tuesday, May 25th at The Plaza. This year’s Sprinfling will honor Dr. Achi Ludmoirsky, director of pediatric cardiology at NYU Langone Medical Center and will also pay tribute to Eugenie Doyle, a pioneer in pediatric cardiology at NYU Langone.
