Spring ball kick-off receptions, orchid dinners, 40th anniversaries

The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s Spring Ball Kick-Off reception at the Core Club.
Last Monday night at the Core Club, The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s Spring Ball Co-Chairs, Tory Burch, Dee Dee Ricks, Shelly Carr and Jamie Tisch hosted a Spring Ball Kick-Off reception. The big excitement that everyone was talking about was that the great Mary J. Blige has agreed to perform at the ball which takes place on May 18th. There are a lot of Mary J. Blige fans out there, as we know, and those sophisticated young women of New York are some of them. So there will be that and the dancing to a famous DJ.

The ball is the Society’s signature event. It’s a glamorous dinner dance. Proceeds from the event provide funding for The Society’s comprehensive patient care, research, and education programs at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.  Since its inaugural ball in 2008, the Spring Ball has helped to raise nearly $4 million for The Society.

Last Tuesday night the New York Botanical Garden held its annual Orchid Dinner at the Mandarin Oriental. This is a fundraiser for the Botanical and its focus is on the flowers and centerpieces which are fabulous.

There were 28 dinner tables done up by several designers, floral, architectural and interior. During the cocktail hour guests have the opportunity to buy rare orchids.

Last Tuesday night Interview magazine celebrated its 40th anniversary at Good Unites on 354 West 58th Street in the subbasement of Hudson Hotel.

There are quite a few of us out there who still own original copies of the original foldover magazine that Andy Warhol first put out in 1970. It was fresh and very downtown which was a different kind of downtown – fixed up lofts at cheap rents for serious artists and the bohemian life, getting by on a nickel and living the high life whenever you were in the position to live it. Working, doing their art, doing their thing; being there.

In the early days Andy went out every night, usually accompanied by two or three others, and sometimes by an entourage, many of whom became famous in the cultural world if not by the masses thanks to that association. I remember seeing Andy in a Park Avenue apartment house lobby, waiting for the elevator, with Interviews under his arm as he was always giving them out to drum up interest.

It had those great covers which were not only artful but hip signature – something new in the world where hip had just been Esquire with its George Lois covers or Rolling Stone which was already Madison Avenue advertiser friendly. Andy turned his magazine into Art and Society and defined, even arbited his world by the interviews and some great portraits of often sexy looking people. He was first there too. A lot of it was considered way over the top to downright vulgar by older parties. What a laugh that is today since its style is now almost sedate compared to today’s sensibilities about the visual.

I think it’s fair to say Interview became the most influential magazine of its time, especially after Vanity Fair was revived, a kind of corporate big budget version of Andy’s little foldover.

Tuesday night’s party brought out a different kind of crowd who live in a different kind of world that Andy more or less influenced in so many way. It was a good crowd and they were having a good time. In the room: Fabien Baron, Kelly Killoren Bensimon, Fabiola Beracasa, Leigh Lezark, Chloe Sevigny, Mary Kate Olsen, Kelly Cutrone, Whitney Port, Kate Bosworth, Peter Brant Naomi Campbell, Daphne Guinness, Lazaro Hernandez, Nate Lowman, Josh Lucas, Terry Richardson, Amy Sacco, Tony Shafrazi, Michael Stipe, Sam Talbot, Olivier Zahm and thousands more just like ‘em.
