Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City raised over $2 million for its programs at their 31st Annual Sidewalks of New York Gala held on April 26, 2010. The event was held at the Waldorf Astoria’s Grand Ballroom.

The Allan Luks Public Service Award was presented to Richard J. Franchella of RBC Wealth Management; Mark Standish, President and Co-Chief Executive of RBC Capital Markets received BigsNYC Corporate Award; Deborah Roberts, ABC News and 20/20 Correspondent was presented with the BigsNYC Communications Award; and the BigsNYC Sports Award went to Baltimore Ravens Offensive Tackle, Michael Oher, whose remarkable story is the subject of the Oscar-nominated film The Blind Side.
Each award was presented to the honoree by a child and his/her mentor. Over the past two months, the matches had been writing and rehearsing their introductory remarks -- making for moving, heartfelt presentations sparkling with individualized wit and personality.
Each of their stories noted the important role that their social workers played in ensuring the long-term success of their mentoring relationship.

The New York Junior League (NYJL) presented its 15th Annual Spring House Tour last Saturday.
The one-day, self-guided tour showcased seven spectacular townhouses and apartments in Manhattan's chicest neighborhoods. Over 600 guests toured residences designed by the renowned architects and designers Geoffrey Bradfield, Laura Day, Robert Passal, Julie Marshall, Michael Murphy, Jennifer Post, Eva Marie Ruschak and Charles Rose. |

The tour began with a continental breakfast sponsored by Mackenzie-Childs at the NYJL Headquarters for Training and Leadership. After touring homes in the morning, guests enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch hosted by the Miele, Sub-Zero and GE Monogram showrooms at the Architects & Designers Building.
Guests also enjoyed a post-tour cocktail reception and silent auction at the Ana Tzarev gallery. Carolyn Englefield, Editor-at-Large of magazine sponsor VERANDA, was in attendance. Lori Silverstein and Joni Grossman co-chaired the event, and Mackenzie Khristov and Laura Wolff served as Vice Chairs. All proceeds raised from the Spring House Tour benefit the many community impact programs realized by the NYJL. |

The New York Junior League (NYJL) is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
As one of the largest volunteer service organizations in New York City, the NYJL has 3,000 volunteers. More than 50 committees support the community needs of New York City as well as the institutional needs of the organization. Naral Pro-Choice New York and the National Institute for Reproductive Health held its Champions of Choice 2010 at the Mandarin Oriental and honored Rabbi Robert Levine, Senior Rabbi of the Congregation Rodeph Sholom.
Featured speaker was Tina Brown. Emmy award winning actor Richard Thomas currently starring in the hit play “Race” on Broadway announced the nominees for the 28th Annual Fred and Adele Astaire Awards honoring excellence in dance and choreography on stage and in film at a by-invitation-only cocktail reception at Elaine’s last Monday.
The Broadway shows “Fela” and “Come Fly Away” received the most nominations for best dance on stage and Rob Marshall and John De Luca for “Nine”; Marguerite Derricks for “Fame” and Lula Washington for” Avatar” were nominated for Best Choreographer in Fictional Film.

The 28th Annual Fred & Adele Astaire Awards presentation will take place at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College, New York on June 7th. The Awards will presented by Ava Astaire in tribute to her father and aunt and by producer Patricia Watt and The Douglas Watt Family Fund for the Performing Arts.
Director and choreographer Kenny Ortega has already been announced to receive the Douglas Watt Lifetime Achievement Award. The awards gala is directed by Lee Roy Reams. Patricia Watt is producer. The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation’s 2nd annual “New York Bag Ladies Luncheon” drew a crowd of 250 women to the elegant 583 Park Avenue to bid on designer, celebrity, vintage, and other handbags, and to mark 40 years of the organization’s fight against the chronic autoimmune disease, systemic lupus.
The luncheon was hosted by the feisty Jill Zarin of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York City, and headlined by Tony winner Joanna Gleason’s crowd-pleasing performance of “I Hate My Purse!” from the hit Off Broadway show Love, Loss, and What I Wore. Prolific author, commentator, and luncheon benefit chairperson Kate Kelly spoke movingly of her daughter’s fight against lupus, and all that the Foundation has done for people with the disease in New York City and the nation.

“The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation has been here for New Yorkers with lupus for 40 years,” said Foundation Executive Director Margaret G. Dowd. The luncheon is a highlight of May‘s Lupus Awareness Month activities in New York City, she added, raising funds and awareness to combat a disease that is under-publicized yet widespread, and potentially life-threatening.
Lupus primarily targets women between the ages of 15 and 44; it is a leading cause of premature heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke among young women.
