The recipient of Solar One’s Environmental Stewardship Award this year is Gina Argento and Broadway Stages, New York City’s premier film and television production facility. Gina, President of Broadway Stages, has made Broadway Stages home to New York’s largest suite of solar arrays covering almost 50,000 square feet of Brooklyn's rooftops. It is also home to a 6,000 square foot green roof organic farm that is part of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.
The recipient of the Young Environmentalist Award is Elettra Wiedemann. Elettra is a model and spokesperson for Lancôme. In 2008, Elettra co-founded One Frickin Day, a non-profit organization that asks people to donate one day of their salary towards very specific causes around the world. Since its inception, One Frickin Day has worked in partnership with Partners In Health and the Solar Electric Light Fund to bring solar power to health clinics in Burundi, Haiti and Rwanda. |

Solar One Green Energy, Arts and Education Center, represents a pioneering concept in New York City, providing visitors and residents with public programs about energy efficiency, renewable energy, green building and urban ecology. A brochure detailing the project and Mayor Bloomberg’s involvement was sent to you last week along with the program of last year’s event. It is a part of the Mayor’s 2030 PlaNYC initiative, www.solar1.org.
Solar One is located in the 2-acre Stuyvesant Cove Park on the East River between 23rd and 18th Street. Solar One has been functioning with a donated temporary structure and in 5 short years it has reached more than 20,000 school children in grades K-12 about public awareness, energy efficiency and conservation as well as educational study in the Park. NYC Department of Education and Solar One launched the Green Design Lab, a sustainability and environmental K-12 educational program, in 10 New York City public schools during the 2010-2011 academic year. |
