On a mild mid-October Monday evening, Fountain House hosted a theatrical event headlining three-time Academy Award nominee Joan Allen and soon-to-be Broadway "Funny Girl" Lauren Ambrose.
This staged reading was based upon the acclaimed memoir Daughter of the Queen of Sheba by NPR's Jacki Lyden, in which she recounts her experiences growing up with a colorful and dramatic mother living with manic depression. The evening drew a full house to the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College and benefited Fountain House, with support from NPR. |

Ms. Allen and Ms. Ambrose summoned theatrical magic as "Sheba" and her daughter Jacki, respectively, ably abetted by noted actors David Aaron Baker and Dan Futterman in a variety of male roles. Acting as Narrator, Ms. Lyden chronicled everyday occurrences from tragic to comic, as these theatre artists called forth a range of complex and at times contradictory emotions. Among the enthralled audience members was the "Sheba" of the memoir's title, Arlene Marshall.
Among those attending were: Anne Mai, Chester and Arlene Salomon, Betsy Seidman, Kenn Dudek, Pauline Anderson, Gary Knell and Kim Larson, Daniel Barnz, Susan Cartsonis, Karen Croner, Scott and Caroline Simon, Dana Davis Rehm, Danielle Deabler, Renee Kelly, Bill O'Leary, Joyce Slocum, Julie Madison, Roz Weisberg, Alan and Sharon Wertheimer, Katherine and Jonathan "Smokey" Baer, Julianne Michelle, Lauren Lawrence, EllynAnn Geisel, Barbara Olcott, Lee Bryant and Norman Schwartz, Judy Finneran, Stephanie Stokes, Mary Moss Greenebaum, Maria Bachman, Anthony Holbrooke, Jack Rosenthal, Holly Russell, Alice Eaton, Josh Aronson, Loretta Dives, David Mitnick, and Agathe Snow. |

Late last month, over 100 friends and supporters of PROMISE PROJECT, the organization dedicated to helping learning disabled children, gathered at the new home of Board member Patsy Kahn. The Fall Celebration was in honor of the new PROMISE Program at Columbia University Medical Center, which began serving children in the Washington Heights neighborhood this past July.
The PROMISE Program at Columbia, located at New York –Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, has been created to be the most comprehensive program in New York City helping impoverished children with learning disabilities get the support they need to learn. PROMISE Program evaluates and diagnoses each child, then advocates with the schools to secure needed services, providing an educational path for a child who is struggling to learn.

As part of PROMISE PROJECT, researchers at Columbia University Medical Center will lead studies aimed at developing low-cost prevention and intervention programs that can be replicated across the country.
PROMISE PROJECT founder and Chair Dana Buchman spoke passionately about the program, and the difference it is already making in the lives of children and their families: "This is just the beginning. There are many children who are struggling and need this help to learn. We are seeking more strategic partners and contributions to make an impact in this area." |
