Many of the designers involved in this year’s HOLIDAY HOUSE have had personal experience with breast cancer. Iris Dankner, founder of HOLIDAY HOUSE, is a 14-year breast cancer survivor and was a member of the Komen Greater NYC Board of Directors and Chair of the Komen NYC Race for the Cure.
“I am very proud to once again be creating an event like Holiday House. It combines my twin passions, love of design and my dedication to Komen Greater NYC,” said Dankner.
HOLIDAY HOUSE 2011 offers an array of activities, such as chocolate tastings by Mariebelle Chocolatier, holiday shopping nights, wine tasting hosted by Brooklyn Winery and a Potterton pop-up-bookstore. In addition, the show house will feature lectures and book signings with a host of authors, from Keith Granet and Amy Lau, to Campion Platt and Celerie Kemble. |

Four hundred designers, architects, scholars, and passionate cognoscenti gathered last weekend for an international conference called Reconsidering Postmodernism. It was sponsored by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art coincident with the 30th publication anniversary of one of the movement's iconoclastic landmarks, Form Bauhaus to Our House by Tom Wolfe.
Friday's session at the CUNY Graduate Center housed in Charles Gwathmey's renewal of the Beaux Arts landmark by Trowbridge and Livingston once known as B. Altman's was followed by a reception in the studios of Robert A. M. Stern crosstown on 34th Street near the Hudson's embankment. Stern's special guests included the speakers, donors, and ICAA trustees. Together they toasted this historical investigation of a design movement that still stirs strong views pro and con as also evidenced these days in London, where the V&A is exhibiting Postmodernism as part of its fabled 20th century design series. Anglo–American architect and theorist, Charles Jencks, was an honored guest as the author who in 1975 first invented the term. In an essay called The Rise of Postmodern Architecture, he explained the brand new moniker thusly, " This title is evasive. If I knew what to call it, I wouldn't use the negative pre-fix 'post'. It is rather like defining women as 'non-men'…" And so it started to transform global culture.
As Dean Robert A.M. Stern summarizes, "We are all postmodernists today. And to paraphrase Philip Johnson, we cannot not know history." |

On October 18th, nearly 150 of Chicago's most philanthropic women joined Bunky Cushing at the Palmer House Hilton to celebrate his 10th Annual Handbags & Halos Luncheon benefiting Howard Brown Health Center. The exclusive event raised more than $50,000 through its famous handbag raffle. Guests were treated to the sound of Stanley Paul and a wonderful keynote address from Jamee Gregory.
Ten lucky guests walked away with one of the season's most coveted accessories, all of which were donated to the luncheon. Handbag donors included Ralph Lauren, Tory Burch, Bulgari, Michale Kors, Escada, Diego Rocha, and 28 Shop at Macy's.
President and Chief Executive Officer of Howard Brown Health Center Jamal Edwards spoke briefly about his gratitude to the host. "We truly could not do the work we do without the generosity of friends like Bunky. We are so grateful for his continuing support. The proceeds from this event will enable us to continue providing compassionate and culturally competent care for everyone in community, especially those who feel they have nowhere else to turn."
Howard Brown Health Center is one of the nation's largest gay healthcare organizations. Through a wide array of health, wellness, social service and research programs, Howard Brown cares for more than 36,000 adult and youth clients annually. |
