| On Wednesday, April 11, 2012, The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center held its Health Education Seminar and Luncheon at the Rockefeller Research Laboratories Auditorium. Led by Society President, Dr. Annette Rickel, the seminar was titled “Immunotherapy: The Next Steps in Cancer Control,” and provided innovative information on ways vaccines can be used to prevent and treat cancer after it has been diagnosed. The presentation featured two of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s distinguished doctors who have been researching and testing the use of vaccines in treating both melanoma and ovarian cancer. Their work at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, coupled with their extensive clinical expertise, set the basis for the information discussed at the lecture. The event was co-chaired by Nancy Coffey and Libby Fitzgerald, with Martha O’Brien and Sarah Powers. The panel discussion was followed by a compelling question and answer session and a seated box luncheon. | The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC), the world’s first child protection agency, held its Inaugural Spring Luncheon on April 12, 2012 at The Pierre Hotel in Manhattan. The afternoon featured a keynote address by The New York Times best-selling author, Sapphire, of the famed novel, Push, the inspiration for the Academy Award® – winning movie Precious. Sapphire’s novel depicted a horrific case of child abuse in Harlem and how one person can make a dramatic difference in saving the life of a child. Sapphire hasreceived the Book-of-the-Month Club Stephen Crane Award for First Fiction, the Black Caucus of the American Library Association's First Novelist Award, and in Great Britain, the Mind Book of the Year Award for Push. Throughout her career, Sapphire has authored three novels and two books of poetry. Additionally, Dr. Mary Pulido, Executive Director of the NYSPCC, delivered remarks about the mission of the NYSPCC, and introduced Sapphire. The Luncheon was a huge success raising $135,735 to benefit the NYSPCC’s Trauma Recovery Program, which provides mental health treatment for children who have experienced traumatic events, such as physical and sexual abuse, neglect and family violence. |

The essential mission of Central Park Playground Partners is to improve the 21 playgrounds in the Park, and maintain their overall quality. | The New York Choral Society celebrated its 53rd Anniversary with a Spring Gala on March 29 at The National Arts Club. Music Director John Daly Goodwin was honored for his 25th anniversary and final season with the New York Choral Society with the Outstanding Leadership Award and joined by friends and patrons in honoring Laura R. Walker, who was presented with the Distinguished Service to Music Award. Ms. Walker was a singing member of NYCS during the tenures of maestros Robert De Cormier and John Daly Goodwin. The cocktail reception began at 6:00 PM and was followed by a seated dinner at 7:00 PM. Afterwards, guests were invited to enjoy a dessert reception. Entertainment was provided by soprano Angela Meade and the Young People’s Chorus of New York. The evening also featured a silent auction of items generously donated by friends and patrons of the Choral Society. |
