 Dance with the Dancers

The Promenade of the New York State Theater for "Dance with the Dancers Lost in Translation: Tokyo-oke 2007." |
The New York City Ballet’s 23rd annual “Dance with the Dancers” was one of their most memorable parties. The evening was called “Lost in Translation: Tokyo-oke 2007.” The kaleidoscope of Tokyo’s neon lights, its funky chic of Harajuku street fashion and the infinite fun of karaoke came to the Promenade and Terrace of the New York State Theater two Monday nights ago.
Candace Bushnell, Allison Sarofim, Teddy Schwarzman and Ellen Zajac co-chaired. Corporate chairs were Carol A. Smith of Elle and Enrico Morra of Piazza Sempione. They were joined by dancer chairmen Sterling Hyltin, Joaquin De Luz, and Craig Hall. More than 800 guests enjoyed the seated dinner, dancing and a great show-stopping act choreographed and performed by NYCB dancers. |

They held the New York Botanical Garden’s Conservatory Ball earlier this month and raised nearly $2 million. The evening also marked the 10th anniversary of the restoration of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, the largest Victorian glasshouse in America.
Gregory Long, President and CEO of the Botanical Garden spoke to the guests on behalf of Board Chairman Wilson (“Roly”) Nolen and the entire Board of The New York Botanical Garden, said: “Since the 1990s, it has fallen to our generation, the people of the Board and staff of the Garden, to restore this institution—its historic landscapes, buildings, programs, and financial strength. Tonight Roly and the Board and I are delighted to be able to tell you that, as we complete Phase II of the renaissance of the Garden this month, the public and private sectors have invested $600 million in this massive project.”
The Conservatory Ball is traditionally the last great gala of the spring social season in New York. It has very strong leadership and they sell hundreds of tickets. It’s black tie and the women dress for the spring and for the garden. It is one of the few galas in New York where a good deal of the time is spent by the guests on the dance floor. And it’s a big dance floor. |

Cunard Line welcomed the American Institute for Stuttering for its first-ever gala luncheon to raise funds for the study and treatment of stuttering two Mondays ago aboard the company’s flagship Queen Mary 2. The event included lunch in the renowned Queens Room, an awards presentation and performances by Otis and the Hurricanes and comedian J.D. Lawrence.
The gala luncheon was emceed by CBS News anchor Katie Couric and co-chaired by Sir Harold Evans, James Manley (CEO of Atlantic Pacific Capital), and Tina Brown. During the gala, the Institute gave its first annual Freeing Voices, Changing Lives Leadership Award to honorees Jake Steinfeld, Kenyon Martin, and Carly Simon.
Guests included Andrè Aciman, Eric Alterman, Candace Bushnell, Susan Cheever, Ron Chernow, Monica Crowley, Patti D’Arbanville, A.M. Homes, Lauren Hutton, Henry David Hwang, Joel Klein, Elsa Klench, Kevin Kline, John Leo, Brian McNally, Michael Nouri, Faith Popcorn, Rex Reed, Reese Schonfeld, Senator Charles Schumer, Ron Silver, Sir Howard Stringer, Calvin Trillin, Sam Waterston, Jack and Suzy Welch, Lynne White. The difference the right co-chair can make was very much in evidence.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that there are more 3 million adults in the United States who stutter and approximately 1 out of every 30 children is affected by stuttering. Though the condition is widespread, the general public is still very misinformed about this genetic and neurological condition, which can lead to inappropriate treatment or even a total lack of treatment. As a result, many people who stutter find themselves isolated or limited by their condition.
The American Institute for Stuttering is a specialized, non-profit treatment center for children, teens, and adults who stutter. It is the only non-profit facility in the United States that offers both day and evening intensive and individual treatment options for people of all ages while also providing clinical training to both new and established speech-language pathologists. AIS’ mission extends to advancing public and scholarly understanding of this often misunderstood disorder. |
