Southampton Days

The Southampton estate of Roberto and Joanne de Guardiola, the setting of last weekend's cocktail party honoring Carroll Petrie and the Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Way out East in Southampton last Saturday at the home of Joanne and Roberto de Guardiola, Margaret Russell, editor-in-chief of Elle Décor, hosted a cocktail party in honor of one of New York’s most stylish (and legendary) glamorous grande dames, Carroll Petrie.

The party also marked the kick-off for the upcoming 20th Anniversary of the Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Preview Party for the International Fine Art and Antique Dealers Show on October 16th at the Park Avenue Armory.

Mrs. Petrie, the widow of retailing tycoon, Milton Petrie has had a life that would read like a great novel. A beautiful young girl from the South, at a very young age she married the Spanish Alfonso, Marquis de Portago, a dashing racecar driver who had numerous well-known affairs with famous beauties including Dorian Leigh and Linda Christian (see yesterday’s NYSD), with whom she had two children. Portago died in the 1957 Mille Miglia when his Ferrari moving at 150 mph blew a tire, killing him, his co-driver and nine spectators including four children. He was 29.

His widow, also still in her twenties, went on to have several serious relationships and two more marriages, the last being Mr. Petrie who left her very rich, mainly in thanks for making his life so gloriously interesting and beautiful.

Today their names grace many important philanthropies including hospitals – such as (but not only) Sloan-Kettering -- schools and museums (including the Met and MoMA) as Mrs. Petrie dispenses the largesse generously. She has also been a very big contirbutors to the Republican Party and is a great friend of Nancy Reagan.

The scene: the de Guardiolas have a beautifully restored and refurbished white framed shingled cottage with a special “entertaining” poolside barn done by Mrs. de Guardiola, a prominent interior decorator. It was a fairly intimate crowd of SMSKCC supporters who came out for the event, including Preview Party chairmen Grace Meigher, Alexandra Lind Rose, and Alexia Hamm Ryan and honorary chair Michel Witmer, Jamee and Peter Gregory, Somers and Jonathan Farkas, Audrey and Martin Gruss, Betty Sherrill, Bettina Zilkha, Frances Hayward, Chris Meigher, Peggy Siegal, Louis Rose, Mary Ellen Winslow, Pat Patterson, Clelia and Tom Zacharias, Missie Rennie Taylor, and Baird Ryan.

The Society’s Annual Preview Party, one of the major parties of every Fall Season, will be featuring a first peek at more than half a billion dollars worth of collectables presented by more than 65 exhibitors. The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is a volunteer organization that promotes the well-being of patients, supports cancer research and provides public education on the prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer.
