Advertiser's Diary

What I did on my summer vacation? Remember that one on the first day of school in the new year? We decided to ask our advertisers what they do on their summer vacations. These next three or four weeks are probably the quietest in the city and all around when so many finally take some time and enjoy the summertime glory (and maybe get some rest):

Todd Rome at the Mercedes-Benz Bridgehampton Polo Challenge.
Blue Star Jets [1]
I've been spending my summer weekends at my house in Bridgehampton relaxing by the pool, taking my kids out on the lake and having good friends over. Now that Polo has started I like to drive my vintage 1955 Alvis or 1931 Pontiac to the Blue Star Jets Field and be a part of it all.

Ilus [2]
This summer I'm enjoying spending time in the city with my friends, as well as in the Hamptons and Nantucket. Things have been hectic since opening my store, so I am going to Turkey on Friday to visit Istanbul and the Mediterranean coast for some much-needed R&R with my best friend. We're packing nothing but bikinis and beach-y frocks. I love summer because I get to wear the best half of my wardrobe -- sundresses and sandals!

Circa [3]
Polo season has kicked into full gear, and I have been spending every free moment in the Hamptons competing and training. In fact, I just had 30 guests enjoy a weekend at my Sag Harbor home; we spent time relaxing in the pool, watching polo, and sampling dishes at some of my favorite local restaurants.

Thanks!!  Don't have any pix handy but as for summer plans: In August we are going to St. Barth's for the first time in summer. We usually go in November and February, but a friend has recently bought a hotel and we're eager to see what he and his wife have done with it. Plus it's the time of the Fetes du St. Barthelmy and St. Louis! Should be a grand time!!

Since summers in New Hampshire are perfect--but far too short--I stay home to tend my gardens. I fill the Chalice Planters with grasses and flowering vines during the warm months, and when fall comes, I transplant the grasses into garden beds. Throughout the winter, the empty Chalices cast beautiful shadows on the snow."

LMD [10]

So, our summer vacation was postponed this year as we are in the middle of construction of our new space. We have a 3500 sq foot design studio with a 500 square foot garden that we are moving to -- hopefully it will be finished in late August, early September.

The plans for our current studio (which is right next door to the new space) is to turn it into a retail shop, LMD Interiors, ready by Christmas 2008. This shop will have a gorgeous mixture of the new and old; garden ornament and European antiques in combination with unusual objects, art and accessories. We have been spending long weekends this summer on buying trips to fill up the new space -- a very productive trip to Maine as well as Atlanta. We have another trip scheduled in August to Charleston, and Paris in early September. I hope we can take a week off in October. I'm thinking Rome. It's my favorite city. Hope this helps. Don't really have anything to show you yet, but be assured as soon as we do, NYSD will be the FIRST to know!

It's become a family tradition of ours to head to the quiet beachside town of ‘Sconset on Nantucket each summer for 2 weeks. My husband John and I love the beauty of the island – it relaxes us.

As a designer, I find it’s the little things that I love: the colorful hydrangeas and roses set against the steel grey shingled ‘Sconset cottages, the pristine oil painted facades of the historic homes on Milk Street, the creative flower pairings in all the window boxes, and the wide open ‘Sconset beaches that we often share with the seals.

After a casual day at the beach, we either have a simple summer cookout at home or go to our favorite restaurants -- Toppers and The Summer House. Inevitably, our 2 1/2 year old son, Baker makes sure we always have enough time before dinner to stop at the nearby swing set in Codfish Park and indulge in ice cream at the 'Sconset Market afterwards.

Christina Sullivan's travel to Martha's Vineyard: The Vineyard is special to me because I spent many summers there when I was younger, working in the general store in Chilmark and at other places. Now that I am married I have taken my husband, Thomas to the island and he enjoys it just as much as I do. This photo (above) was taken at “The Inn at Blueberry Hill” in Chilmark, Mass this past weekend.

My husband and I look forward to our time there, especially when we are able to spend it with friends and family. We enjoy all of the Vineyard's 6 towns, each of which has special characteristics. We love to watch the sunsets of Menemsha and eat Quahog chowder and key lime pie from the “Homeport,” stroll through the old whaling village of Edgartown and take long bike rides through the famous leafy roads and stone walls of Chilmark. Every time we go, we find the scenery becomes more and more breathtaking, a favorite of mine is strolling by the white clapboard Captains' homes of Edgartown against the blue green backdrop of the ocean. Each time we visit there, we always find beautiful images that we’ve never seen before.

A quiet Bastide in Provence close to Ménerbes and nestled in a vineyard provided the antidote to the frenzy of New York City. Dinners under an umbrella of plane trees with candlelight and crisp white linens were a soothing end to each day. Then to Ville de Vence high in the hills to the luxury of Chateau Saint-Martin. Visits to The Maeght Foundation, The Matisse Chapel, and exhibitions of fragrance vessels, perfume burners and a collection of paintings & textiles at Fragonard.

The two weeks ended in London attending a beautiful and joyous wedding. The plane ride home had me bonding with my Amazon Kindle.

I just got back from South Beach where I have recently opened a fourth office. I love it there in the summer, its quiet and the restaurants and clubs are so much easier to deal with. I prefer to be in places during their off-season ... I travel in reverse!

Geoffrey Bradfield rented a palace in Marrakech and invited ten guests to celebrate July 4th holiday with him there. It was such a mysterious and other worldly place. As you can see from the photos, I had a wonderful time. This trip was THE highlight of my summer.

Ankasa [18]
While most designers travel to beaches and lakes in the summer months, Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia, of ANKASA New York, chose to travel where they could be inspired — AFRICA. Both had longed to travel there together, and decided to fit a "second honeymoon" into their busy schedules. From lions and elephants in the landscape; to the rocky coast of cape town, there was a great deal of inspiration to be had. Take a trip to their store on 65th Street and Lexington avenue to see some of the treasures they found on their trip, in their Afrikana room.

Nikki Sedacca [20]
Just back from Bali, Nikki Sedacca and daughter, Montana Ross, are all smiles as they celebrate an exclusive signing of a special collection of Nikki’s elegant jewelry with the Ritz-Carlton Bali Resort & Spa. Next stop: Edgartown, Nikki’s favorite summering spot in the Northeast. Montana, a June graduate from the U of Florida, will be helping her mom there as well with a mid-August trunk show at Optional Art on The Vineyard. What a whirlwind working summer!

Nazmiyal [21]

Jason Nazmiyal and his family are enjoying the summer by the pool, entertaining with friends and driving the kids to camp! (Montville, NJ). Jason has been in the Antique carpet field for over 20 years. His success is due to his keen eye and an amazing selection of antique carpets.
