Autumn Balls

Dancing in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf=Astoria for Lenox Hill Hospital's Autumn Ball 2007.
The Waldorf=Astoria Grand Ballroom was the setting for the Lenox Hill Hospital Autumn Ball 2007 celebrating the hospital’s 150th anniversary which skipped its long tradition of honoring an individual to celebrate instead the hospital’s dedicated doctors, nurses, staff and benefactors who have made the healthcare facility what it is today.

For over a century, the Autumn Ball has been regarded as one of the seasons most glamorous events, and this year was no exception. Chaired by Judith and William Hiltz and Gudrunand Chitranjan S. Ranawat, MD, the gala drew more than 1100 guests, one of the largest crowds in its history. The Hospital’s single most important event of the year raised over $3.1 million for The Hospital’s medical services and community programs.

The ballroom was awash in a sea of red roses, spilling over enormous Waterford crystal vases atop black silk covered tables. Katherine McEnroe, mother of tennis great John McEnroe was particularly thrilled as she and fellow co-chairs Carolyn Davis and Jim McMullen  had spent much time with the designer to achieve the dramatic effect. Mrs. McEnroe had been a nurse there in her early years.

Following the tributes by William Hiltz, Board Chairman of The Hospital, President Gladys George and Dr. Ranawat, there was a wonderful video montage that chronicled The Hospital from its earliest days as German Hospital in the East Village before it moved to its Park Avenue home and the development of its international reputation and consequently, well known celebrity patients.

Indeed, as famed as Lenox Hill is as a pioneer in medical care, the hospital has long been the first choice for many celebrated figures going back to 1931 when Winston Churchill was treated there after having been hit by a car! Julie Andrews has her throat doctor there. Bette Midler, Deborah Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker had their babies at Lenox Hill.

The video featured funny clips of Al Roker and wife Deborah Roberts, Alan Alda with stethoscope listening to his doctor’s heart and a segment featuring Honorary Chair Matthew Broderick with his and his wife’s son James Wilke. Broderick and Parker were unable to attend as she is filming late night scenes for the upcoming Sex and the City and he was – babysitting!

Zirin, Ellen and Jim Marcus. El Museo del Barrio’s Young International Committee celebrated the Dia de los Muertos with masked wrestlers and traditional altars decked with marigolds, skeletons, watermelons, and open bottles of tequila. Chairmen Jana Pasquel, Samantha Thompson, and Mayra Hernandez greeted guests under the beautiful vaulted ceilings of a 150-year-old gothic building by candlelight, and Museo Director Julian Zugazagoitia welcomed guests from inside the wrestling ring at the center of the party.

Guests including designers Zang Toi, Gemma Kahng, Maria Cornejo, and Christian Cota, leaned over the balcony to watch Zugazagoitia referee the authentic Mexican wrestling match between two luchadores. Guests sipped on margaritas and sangrita at the beautiful lower east side Angel Orensanz Foundation, and after the wrestling match was over, they took over the ring for dancing.
