Summer and Tropical Thunder

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise at the L.A. premiere of “Tropic Thunder.”
This past Tuesday at Mann’s Village in Westwood, they held the L.A. premiere of “Tropic Thunder” starring Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr, and Ben Stiller. Back in 1970s, there was a comedy group called Firesign Theater who produced parodies on LPs. I can’t remember the name of the specific album, but I thought of it when I looked at these photographs of people who are regarded as, or presumably are, important actors and film industry people.

The Firesign Theater had one skit called “Lives of Poor People As Told By Rich Hollywood Stars.” A bit of prescience if you take a good look at this gaggle of celebrity, many of whom might have just risen from a long afternoon nap, rolled out of bed, into their Beemer or Mercedes (or Prius) and drove over to Westwood.

In most cases, the glitter and the bling of stardom is completely absent except for the sneakers. I bet some of them came with luxury price tags. All I’m saying is the charisma that inspired the concept of stardom is virtually non-existent in this crew. Well maybe Jody Foster and Tom and Katie and Mr. McConaughey, who was looking like an expensively turned out version of the guy next door (with the bongos) and a couple others. Otherwise scag-au-sport and skank-o-couture.

Last Saturday in Southampton at the home of Henry Buhl, they held Sunflowers After Hours. They honored Brent Nicklas, Sheila Rosenblum, and Debra Wasser. Honorary Chairs were Henry, Larry Leeds and Susan Sarandon. Co-Chairs were Edward Bulgin, Dominic D’Alleva, Robin Cofer, Leslie Feldman, and Marianna Olszewski Rounick.

They were celebrating 16 years of helping homeless men and women help themselves. Henry started The Association of Commmunity Employment Programs for the Homeless (A.C.E.) with an idea for helping keep his neighborhood clean and orderly and productive. When he moved to SoHo, homelessness was almost epidemic in New York. His plan started simply. Getting the men without a room or cash in their pockets to sweep up the streets and sidewalks. Today it has become an important New York foundation.

His Southampon house is next to a field of 20,000 sunflowers. Henry loves sunflowers. There are more carved on his massive double front doors, and you’ll find the reference to them all over his house.
