The Friday before last, up in Newport, the Preservation Society of Newport County, in partnership with Tiffany & Company, entertained 600 at a Tiffany Ball held in The Breakers, the mansion of Alice Gwynne and Cornelius Vanderbilt II. The Preservation Society’s ongoing mission is to preserve its collection of historic houses and landscapes, including seven National Historic Landmarks. The black tie event raised $300,000 for the cause.
An interesting additional fundraiser was the sale of 200 Tiffany boxes for $150. Each box contained a keepsake Tiffany crystal or porcelain box. Two boxes however, contained a pair of Tiffany Aria pearl and diamond drop earrings in platinum and a Tiffany T-57 men’s sports watch.
The ball was held in the Great Hall of the mansion (See NYSD 8.18.08: Newport Summers [1]). Dinner was served on the terrace in a tent, decorated by David Price of Newport. The menu consisted of: Chilled Lobster Salad with Smoked Paprika Remoulade, served with Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio 2006. The entrée was Beef Tenderloin with Melted Leeks and Shitake Mushrooms, Oven-roasted New Potatoes and Summer Sweet Pea Puree, served with Chateauneuf du Pape Mont-Redon 2004. Dessert was Meyer Lemon Mascarpone Cheese Cake with summer fruit jewels served with Taittinger La Francaise Brut N/V. |
