Last Thursday night at Cipriani 42nd Street, the National Marfan Foundation hosted its annual benefit, “Heartworks: The Marfan Gala." The black-tie evening started with NBC’s Brian Williams and Hoda Kotb serving as masters of ceremonies. Mayor Bloomberg was Honorary Chairperson.

Monday, a week ago, New York Women in Communications presented the 2009 Matrix Awards in honor of eight extraordinary women during a luncheon at the Waldorf-Astoria.

The prestigious annual award recognizes exceptional women who have established themselves in communications fields such as advertising, arts & entertainment, broadcasting, digital media, magazines, marketing, newspapers and public relations. The ceremony, hosted by Seventeen magazine, was emceed by Meredith Vieira, Today co-anchor and host, Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Portions of the proceeds from the Matrix Awards Luncheon go to the New York Women in Communications Foundation, which offers a full range of scholarships to women whether just beginning their careers, embarking on a professional transition or advancing their skill-set.

Since 1970, New York Women in Communications' Matrix Awards Luncheon has been recognized by New York's communications and entertainment communities as one of the most outstanding events of the year. Past recipients include Arianna Huffington, Katie Couric, Meryl Streep, Nora Ephron, Ann Moore, Toni Morrison, Barbara Walters and Anna Quindlen.

Proceeds from the Matrix Awards Luncheon are used by New York Women in Communications to develop and maintain a full calendar of affordable programs and special events, networking and support systems for the organization's members and the community at large. Additionally, the New York Women in Communications Foundation awards scholarships and provides educational programs for women, whether just beginning their careers or embarking on a transition in their careers. It is the largest foundation for communications scholarships for women in the tri-state area.

Lenox Hill Neighborhood House held its annual Volunteer Recognition Celebration in their Brooke Russell Astor Auditorium. The purpose was to honor and thank the hundreds of volunteers who give their time, expertise and energy to help The House successfully serve 20,000 Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island neighbors in need: children and families, homeless and formerly homeless, adults and seniors . . .

There was a student performance of the song “Wildflowers” and a Maypole Dance. It was performed by children from The House’s Afterschool Program’s Spring Festival. The theme of the year’s school program was Planet Earth.

Board President Tom Edelman and Executive Director Warren Scharf presented 2009 Elizabeth Rohatyn Awards for Community Service to Saint Peter’s Church, accepted by Reverend Jared Stahler and Kathy Burt; to Temple Emanu-El, accepted by Associate Rabbi Amy Ehrlich; and to Mark Gilbertson, who has been actively involved with The House for the past 15 years. Mark has successfully focused his attention on attracting a younger group of committed supporters.

Leading the applause in the packed hall were Mark’s mother Ellen Gilbertson, Chairman of the Board Diana Quasha, Director of Volunteer Services Anthony Snowden, Reneé Landegger, Helen Tilney, Sydney Shuman, volunteer Carole Mandel, Christopher Spitzmiller, Evelyn Tompkins, Mario Buatta, Polly Onet, Martha Glass, Doug Steinbrech, Roger Webster and Virginia Pitman, The House’s popular Director of Special Events.

Following the award presentations, a delicious buffet was served.

The Point Foundation’s Point Honor ... New York, the annual gala was also held at the Roosevelt Hotel Monday night a week ago.

The Point Inspiration Award went to PricewaterhouseCoopers, presented by "Ugly Betty" stars Tony Plana and Judith Light. Legendary Angela Lansbury, currently performing eight shows a week on Broadway in "Blithe Spirit," took the night off to salute her friend Arthur Laurents with the Point Legend Award. Vanessa Williams wrote and performed a special parody song for her boss, Silvo Horta, before presenting him with the Point Courage Award.
