We had the bright idea of running a retrospective of party pictures a couple of weeks ago, because the current scene’s cupboards are often bare at this time of the year. So we did, as you may have noticed.
We had a couple things in mind, editorially speaking, but after going through our archives we found we just liked looking at the pictures and the people, much of which evoked many thoughts and feelings. We decided not to follow any editorial line except to demonstrate the diversity of the world of the New York Social Diary in terms of age and youth and personality and type and style.
For me it became that feeling you have when you’re looking through a family album of long, or not so long ago, as is the case here. For the record, these are all pictures you’ve seen first here on the NYSD. Many are familiar faces, many are names that slip my memory (so easily). Some are celebrated, some are rich; some are notorious (oh com’on!) and meritorious.
Like the Naked City, there are a million stories here, enough to take up a couple of lifetimes of a modern Saint-Simon. And then there’s the energy. It fairly leaps from the page. Don’t worry; it’ll only make you laugh, or at least smile along with everyone else. |
