The scene at the First Annual Watermill Benefit Concert.
The Last Song of Summer, the First Annual Watermill Benefit Concert, raised over $200K for the Watermill Center’s year-round international artist residencies and education programs. The concert was sold out and raised more than expected. The outdoor event featured a performance by Rufus Wainwright and his special guest, legendary soprano Jessye Norman, and their opening act Daniel Knox.
Guests were also treated to surprise performances by Wainwright’s mother and aunt, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, and his sister Martha Wainwright. The event was sponsored by L’Oreal and Sotheby’s, with additional support from Brooks Brothers.
This is the first installment of a new annual end-of-summer benefit concert that will take place at the Watermill Center each year. The concert was created as a smaller and more casual counterpart to The Watermill Center’s great summer gala dinner. A full-house of guests were given the unique opportunity to see the pop star and the opera diva perform on an intimate outdoor stage in the beautiful landscaped and wooded setting of Robert Wilson’s center for the arts and humanities.
Event co-chairs were Lisa Anastos, Martin Dawson, Amanda Hearst, Tobias Meyer, Shamim M. Momin, Dalia Oberlander and Viktor & Rolf. The concert was produced by Jared Geller / Foster Entertainment.
