Last Thursday night at the Biltmore Theatre, playwright William Inge’s most popular play, “Come Back Little Sheba” opened with a new Manhattan Theatre Club production directed by two time Emmy winner Michael Pressman. S. Epatha Merkerson and Kevin Anderson headed the cast.
The original production which opened on Broadway on February 15, 1950. Although it was not initially popular (only half the critics gave it a thumbs up) mainly because of the subject matter (out-of-wedlock pregnancy, alcoholism in domestic drama) in those days, made a star of actress Shirey Booth who also played the role of Lola in the 1952 film (with Burt Lancaster) and won an Oscar for her performance. |
