Jill Krementz Photo Journal - Celebrating Mandela Day

Mandela Day Installation
Vanderbilt Hall/Grand Central Terminal
July 9th-July 22nd

If you are near Grand Central Station, I urge you to visit The Mandela Day Installation. It’s in Vanderbilt Hall and is open, free of charge, to the public between July 9th and July 22nd. Hours: 7:30AM to 7:30PM.

The exhibition uses the story of Nelson Mandela’s life as an inspirational call to action for all of us to change the world for the better. South Africa’s former President will celebrate his 91st birthday on July18th.

The installation has been designed by Ralph Applebaum Associates and features six giant 3-D words: Act, Listen, Lead, Unite, Learn and Speak. There is a five-minute film that highlights Nelson Mandela’s values and legacy.

Most moving of all — the signed tributes left by visitors.
Joyce Godfrey, one of the volunteers , who doles out special pens so visitors can make an imprint of their own on backs of plexiglass panels.
