| Artist Will Ryman’s second exhibition, Will Ryman: A New Beginning, opened at Marlborough Gallery in Chelsea on September 10, a very busy night on the New York social calendar. But, despite the dozens of events for Fashion’s Night Out, for example, and the unofficial opening of the art season in New York, more than 1200 arrived at the Marlborough to toast the artist who is also the son of celebrated abstract painter Robert Ryman. The exhibition, an installation of towering roses, some as high as 7ft. was a great success with the crowd including many members of the art world such as Marlborough owner Pierre Levai, Art in America editor David Ebony, Robert Ryman, Whitney Museum of American Art director Adam D. Weinberg, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Manuela Hoelterhoff, Deborah Kass and art advisor Liz Parks. Among others attending: Art Production Fund’s Casey Fremont, nearly naked performance artist Kiera Grant, Manhattan Magazine’s Richard Martin, designer Titina von Waldow and The Shooting Gallery’s drummer Julian Ungano and lead singer Peter Smith, both exhausted from their Webster Hall gig the night before. Several viewers referenced Alice in Wonderland while weaving through the installation. Ryman explained that the scale and detritus were meant to suggest an urban garden seen through the eyes of a rodent. |
