The Horticultural Society of New York held its 15th Annual Fall Luncheon at The Metropolitan Club with guest speaker Carolyne Roehm. In case you didn't know, Carolyne's career in fashion includes ten years spent working for Oscar de la Renta as a designer, house model and muse before launching her own fashion house, Carolyne Roehm Inc. After studying in Paris with the renowned florist Moulié Savart, she wrote her first book, A Passion for Flowers, which has become “the bible for flower designing,” according to Senga Mortimer of House & Garden magazine. Roehm has followed up that best-selling book with eight more books on floral design, table tops, food, gardening, interiors, gift wrapping and party planning. This fall, she will release her ninth book, A Passion for Blue and White, and will begin writing a new monthly column in Veranda magazine. And that's just the beginning.

Mrs. Charles A. Dana, Jr. was presented with the HSNY Award of Excellence to celebrate her outstanding contributions to horticulture and conservation. Norma Dana has been a leader in the philanthropic community for decades. Among her many charitable endeavors, she is a co-founder of the Women’s Committee of the Central Park Conservancy, as well as an Honorary Trustee of The Wildlife Conservation Society, a member of the New Canaan Nature Center Advisory Board, a member of the Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Advisory Committee and a long-time HSNY supporter.

The event supports The Horticultural Society of New York’s community outreach programs:

• Apple Seed, a science program offered in schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods

• GreenBranches, a program of installing and maintaining professionally designed gardens at branch libraries in neighborhoods with few green spaces

• GreenHouse/GreenTeam program on and after incarceration at Rikers Island, which prepares inmates and ex-offenders for entry into the job market, by training them in horticulture and landscaping

On Saturday night, November 8th, more than 200 Young Patrons of the American Friends of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (AFTAM) gathered at the Soho gallery Deitch Projects for a private viewing of Kehinde Wiley’s “Down.”

Organized by Stacy Rotner, Valerie Fields, Rebecca Alvandi and Julie Brener, the event raised funds for the art library at the Tel Aviv Museum, Israel’s leading museum of modern art. The 60,000-volume library, the most comprehensive of its kind in the Middle East, serves more than 10,000 art lovers, scholars, curators, soldiers and students each year.

AFTAM, founded in 1974 to raise funds for the museum and to seek gifts of notable works of art for its collections, began the Young Patrons group three years ago. Last week, Hilary and Wilbur Ross, who co-chair the Collectors and Connoisseurs Committee with Mario Buatta, Pauline Pitt and Tom Quick for the American International Fine Art Fair, graciously hosted a cocktail reception at their spectacular residence (beautifully decorated by Mr. Buatta) to celebrate the fair's opening in Palm Beach on February 3-8. In its 12th year, the fair is back with the original founders David and Lee Ann Lester, who sold it to dmg world media several years ago for a reported 20 million dollars. Apparently, the dealers missed David and Lee Ann so much that they rallied for their return ... and so the Lesters heeded the call, regained ownership, and are back at the helm with the support and backing of their loyal supporters.

El Museo held its annual Young International Circle event a couple Friday's ago where the crowd was cheerful and dressed to the nines for a night of dancing, drinking, noshing, and bidding on items from their silent auctions all the while tunes by DJ Steven Love of Noveau Riche played in the background.

The event’s chairmen were Mayra Hernandez, Jana Pasquel, and Samantha Thompson.

The theme of the event was ‘La Loteria: An Exploration of Mexico.’ Loteria is a traditional card game that can be traced back to 15th century and is often compared to bingo. As such, the room was decked-out in limited edition prints of over-sized loteria cards designed by Teresa Villegas which depicted colorful images of fabled Mexican figures.

There was a silent auction which included two cocktail dresses by Christian Cota, a dress of choice by Cynthia Rowley, an Oscar de la Renta handbag, a handbag by Jimena Ysita, dVb jeans, a necklace by Lee Angel, along with about 70 other luxurious items.

All proceeds of the auction and event benefited El Museo’s Education and Community Programs. El Museo del Barrio was founded in 1969 by artist Raphael Montañez Ortiz with the support of a group of Puerto Rican educators, artists, parents and community activists in East Harlem’s Spanish-speaking El Barrio.

Since then, El Museo del Barrio has evolved into New York’s leading Latino cultural institution, having expanded its mission to represent the diversity of art and culture in all of the Caribbean and Latin America and today, it is the only museum in New York City that specializes in representing these cultures.
