Garden of Hope & ARTrageous on NYSD ...

The Strang Cancer Prevention Center’s Garden of Hope gala at New York City’s Metropolitan Club was a glamorous evening, sponsored by Lehman Brothers’ Todd Rubsamen. The event raised $262,000 with $200,000 in additional related gifts to allow the over 70-year-old institution to continue its work dedicated to creating world without cancer through early detection, research and education.

Dr. Michael Osborne, the President of Strang, was the evening’s honoree. Honorary Chair Iris Cantor presented him with his award citing his compassion and dedication. “He has given women a better way to be healthy and happy. I flew a long way to get her tonight and I would not have done so for anyone else,” she said.

Also honored were Matilda Cuomo who received the Dr. Elise Strang L’Esperance Leadership Award and Linda Leong who received the Volunteer Recognition Award.

Dr. Richard Rivlin, Director of The Ann Fisher Nutrition Center spoke of the importance of nutrition in maintaining healthy lives. Co-chair Sharon Bush introduced the evening’s entertainment, singer Rufus Wainwright, who was accompanied at the piano by his mother Kate McGarrigle.

Wainwright wowed the crowd with two of his own songs. He finished his set, appropriately with a rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow dedicated to Dr. Osborne.

Mario Buatta was the evening’s Master of Ceremonies and auctioneer. DJ Tom Finn kept the dance floor packed in between courses.

For more than 70 years, Strang physicians and scientists have dedicated themselves to preventing cancer through early detection, research and education. As the oldest dedicated U.S. cancer prevention institute, Strang has discovered, developed and distributed globally some of today’s most effective cancer prevention tools, including the Pap test for cervical cancer and sigmoidoscopy for colon cancer. Strang research aims to diagnose and treat cancer in the early stages- before the need for surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

Children picked up their paintbrushes and joined some of the grown-up artists  including Jeff Koons, Romero Britto, Hunt Slonem, Donald Baechler, Peter Beard, Patrick McMullan, Carlton de Woody, Will Cotton, Kehinde Wiley, Erik Parker, Greg Lauren, Spencer Tunick and Mark Kostabi at the 6th Annual ARTrageous Children’s Day at the Metropolitan Pavilion.

Actresses Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Elizabeth Berkeley, CBS-2 reporter Kirsten Cole and Allison Weiss Brady, Gillian Miniter and Fabiola Beracasa showed their support of the event benefiting Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families, a non-profit organization that has been serving and protecting children residing in foster care for more than 65 years.

Foster children painted alongside children from the ARTrageous Kids Committee to help create artwork.  The pieces will be unveiled and sold at the ARTrageous Gala Dinner and Art Auction on May 23, 2007 at Cipriani on 42nd Street. The evening will honor Hunt Slonem and Debra Wasser, and is supported by Honorary Chairs Sheila Rosenblum and George Weiss, Art Chairs Randall Brockett, Henry Buhl and Alice Judelson, and co-chairs Victoria and Hunter Allen, Edward Bulgin, Vincent du Vigneaud, Drew Kellerman, Carole and Todd Rome, Gregg Wasser and Jill and Bobby Zarin.

The ARTrageous Children’s Day also featured a carnival with games, prizes, jugglers, stilt walkers, petting zoo and performances. Kids also got the chance to meet celebrities their own age including Harrison Chad and Kathleen Herles from Dora the Explorer, Paulina Gerzon of The Sopranos, Seamus Davies Fitzpatrick from The Omen, Quassim Middleton from Nickelodeon and Josh Flitter of the upcoming Nancy Drew movie.
