Looking up in the Guggenheim Museum for The Cinema Society's screening of “The International.” |
| “God of Carnage” by Yasmina Reza, opened Monday night at the Bernard Jacobs Theater, starring Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Marcia Gay Harden and James Gandolfini. Ben Brantley apparently liked it. We saw it in London last June with Ralph Fiennes, Janet McTeer, Ken Stott and Tamsin Greig. Two contemporary couples meet to discuss a problem between their two sons. |

| The night we saw it in London, the audience was at first a little tense because of the hostile vibes developing between the two couples. Soon, however, the hostility drifted into the waters of absurdity and there were moments when the show was a laff-riot. In the beginning I was one of the few in the theater who seemed to think it was funny, and found myself guffawing into a sea of silence. I couldn’t help it. Eventually the entire audience couldn’t help it. It is a wonderful metaphor for the later boomers. |

| The Cinema Society held a celebrity packed screening of The International. Angel by Thierry Mugler co-hosted. The film’s two stars Clive Owen and Naomi Watts were both there, as was director Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run). Afterwards there was a fabulous party for all those fabulous kids at the Guggenheim Museum (the location, it so happened, of one of the picture’s more memorable shoot-em-up chases). Cinema Society founder Andrew Saffir welcomed glitterati et al, as well as Owen and Watts and other members of the cast, as well as a celebrating cast of hundreds including Brian F. O’Byrne, Jack McGee, and Felix Solis, along with Spike and Tonya Lee, Michael Stipe, Isla Fisher, S.
