Swanning With Adrian

Swanning With Adrian

Did I say things we were winding down? I must have been deluded. Last weekend in the Hamptons was the perfect storm of politics, money, power, entertainment, and a little sentimentality thrown in to remind us we are actually human.

As you may have heard, Hill and Bill are churning up the potato patches in Sagaponack. They took this opportunity to raise a few rubles for his Bill, Hilary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, which may or may not be part of The Clinton Global Initiative. I’ve lost track of his gazillions.
Bill and Hillary 's home in Sagaponack for the summer (owned by Republican donor Michael Saperstein).
Ron Perelman (the busiest boy — more to come), and Mort Zuckerman, among others, threw a do at Topping Rose, the restaurant that was already white hot and impossible to get in to. Thanks, Bill. The big Dems were all there: Alan and Susan Patricof, Marc Lasry, Robert Zimmerman, Joel Klein, Ann Tenenbaum, Michael Kempner, Donna Karan, Barbara Lee-Diamonstein-Spielvogel and Liz Robbins and Doug Johnson who feted the Clintons the night before. Infinite feting here. Not a word mentioned about Hillary’s possible run. All in good time.
Clockwise from top left: Ron Perelman; Alan and Susan Patricof; Joel Klein; Mort Zuckerman; Barbara Lee-Diamonstein-Spielvogel; Ann Tenenbaum.
Governor Andrew Cuomo, cleverly tacked on a fundraiser while the funds were flowing, and had his own shindig Sunday night with Jon Bon Jovi entertaining. I wondered if Sandra Lee made the lasagna, with ketchup. Not if Matilda was in the house.

Earlier that Friday, Eric Schmidt was given a book party in Southampton, sans Google glasses, so nary a report. Birthdays were also celebrated. Ben Bradlee’s 92nd was toasted by Barbara Walters, Carl Bernstein, Charlie Rose and a few other real journos, and real friends. Gigi and Avie Mortimer celebrated their anniversary, too. Kathy and Rick Hilton had their annual dinner. They are rumored to be the consummate hosts, and I heard the Glorious Food menu was the best of the summer.

I have no complaints, though, as I suspect I went to the party of the summer. Ron Perelman opened the gates (literally, though only if they had your name), for the 3rd summer to benefit The Apollo Theater. Someone is doing something right in that development office. Paul Tudor Jones has just joined the board, and the cumulative force was palpable. Marcus Samuelson cooked, Questlove spinned. Roots was the ‘house band’, and that’s just for starters. Jamie Fox and Pharrell Williams were joined by Colin Powell on stage for the chorus of  “Get Lucky.” This was after they sang "Blurred Lines” — the song of the summer and the biggest generation uniter, moving moguls like Henry Kravis, Ron Lauder, Dick Parsons (the most easily moved, despite his size).

Katie Holmes
seemed to lose her last vestiges of imprisonment and jived her way onstage, joined by Ellen DeGeneres. Mary Kate Olsen snuggled on Oliver Sarkozy’s lap. Ciara sang, followed by the energetic Bon Jovi and Darlene Love. Lenny Kravitz belted “American Woman,” and the American women swooned.  Billy Joel and Mary J. Blige didn’t sing, but didn’t have to. Angelica Houston mingled with Harvey Weinstein and Don Johnson. They raised over $3 million, and in my book, they earned every penny.
