Full-on Fun at Fitch’s Corner Horse Trials

A patient bystander.
For 24 years Fernanda Kellogg and her husband, Kirk Henckels, have opened their farm and their arms to an eclectic and enthusiastic mix of horses, hounds, spectators, vendors and shoppers for the Fitch’s Corner Horse Trials, which every year sprawls over an ever larger part of their lush acreage in the middle of Dutchess County, near Millbrook, NY.
Two full days of activity included an equestrian competition: Dressage, Cross Country and stadium jumping classes from novice to expert; a Saturday Night Social for smoozing and shopping under a lantern-lit tent sheltering more than 30 tempting shops while listening to the lively music of the Saints of Swing; a Sunday luncheon for the benefit of the Millbrook Fire Department Rescue Squad; as well as ribbons and cups awarded to the best riders in each class. There were several other awards including one given to Nancy and Bill Stahl, longtime Millbrook residents, for their service to the community and another, the Barbara Meyer Trophy, which honored a young rider.

Luncheon guests were treated to Champagne Prestige des Sacres, from Reims, France, known as the champagne of Kings, having  been drunk by them — and lucky others — since 1722. Other diversions included the elegant parade of antique cars and the not quite so elegant parade of eager Millbrook Hunt Hounds. There was so much to do and see. By late Sunday afternoon, a few of the happy but exhausted participants looked as if they might have welcomed a little rescuing, too.
