Last Thursday night at the Frick Collection, they held their annual Young Fellows Ball, now in its 19th year. This year’s ball took place in partnership with ESCADA, and drew its theme from Paolo Veronese’s monumental Choice Between Virtue and Vice (ca. 1565).

This evening is one of the most highly regarded social events of the season in New York. Many of the 600 guests were inspired by the evening’s theme— ranging from “virtuous” blush tones to “vices” bold colors and classic black. They filled the elegant Garden Court for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and dancing in the Music Room with music by Timo and Rosé.
Entering the Garden Court
The energy of the evening was felt throughout the entire museum, especially in the Frick’s West Gallery where the Veronese painting was on view. There were moments when it seemed like there were just as many guests in the gallery as on the dance floor!

Taking their inspiration from Veronese's work, L&M Light and Sound devised
a dramatic lighting scheme that brought to life the duality of the painting's theme by visually dividing the Frick's Garden Court into two distinct spaces.

Guests were dazzled on one side by a dark, forbidding
forest of twisted branches awash in rich, red light, while the other side was a heavenly mix of ethereal white clouds and brilliant blues sky. Putnam & Putnam complimented it all with a floral wall filled with seasonal fresh flowers of bold colors and strong lines, which also evoked the colors of Veronese's painting. White azaleas and phalaenopsis planted in the garden beds of the Frick's stunning Garden Court captivated guests.
Caterer Olivier Cheng contributed to the elegant mood of the evening with Virtue-and-Vice inspired savory hors d’oeuvres and desserts. Such as:: Spicy tuna on a crispy rice cake with furikake; crab cakes topped with marinated cucumber and chipotle dressing; chicken schnitzel with red cabbage, Dijon, and lemon; seared rare wagyu ‘lollipop’ with fleur de sel served on pronged skewers; truffled grilled cheese sandwich with celery relish; edamame puree on a nori chip; cauliflower croquet; New England lobster rolls; pigs in a blanket with deli mustard; classic cheeseburger with ‘Shack’ sauce and pickle; and vegetable spring rolls.
Chairs for the evening were:Paul Arnhold, Sarah Flint, Amory McAndrew, and Gillian Hearst Simonds. Honorary chairs were Suzanne Humbert and Niall Sloan. Dress code was:  Virtue and Vice Black Tie. Chairmen of the event and selected guests wore gowns by ESCADA: Chefanie, Sarah Flint, Gillian Hearst, Eaddy Kiernan, Jessica Mateer, Amory McAndrew, Toby Anne Milstein, Arielle Patrick, Alexandra Porter, Megan Ramm, Nicole Stillings, Lisa Volling, Laura Day Webb.

Then: At 11:00 p.m., guests were offered passed sweets: Apple crumble tartlet; mini glazed donuts; toblerone semifreddo lollipop; and milk chocolate salted caramel rice crispy treat . I mean really, do you think everyone got enough to eat?

Guests of the ball enjoyed wine and sparkling wine provide by Malabaila di Canale and Ferrari Trento. The evening’s specialty cocktails, created especially for the event, were “Virtue,” made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, and “Dark Side,” made with Jonnie Walker Black Label.

This was a party for the books, and everyone looked great too. Proceeds from the benefit event provide essential support for the Frick’s many activities, including the acclaimed programs of its education department, which serves New York City public schools in all five boroughs, and the Frick Art Reference Library.
