Mark Morris was born on August 29, 1956, in Seattle Washington, where he studied
dance with Verla Flowers and Perry Brunson.
After performing with a variety of dance groups in the early years of his career,
he formed the Mark Morris Dance
Group in 1980. It is now widely regarded as one of the world’s leading
dance companies, performing across the U.S. and at major international festivals.
The company’s London seasons have garnered two Laurence Olivier Awards.
In 2001, the Mark Morris Dance Center opened in Brooklyn, New York. The 30,000-square
foot facility features three studios and a school for 400 students of all ages.
Morris has created over 100 works for his company, as well as pieces for many
others, including The San Francisco Ballet, The Paris Opera Ballet and The American
Ballet Theatre. A portion of sales from the evening will benefit the dance center. |
