The Jewish Home & Hospital LifeCare System, one of the oldest, largest and most advanced non-profit geriatric centers in the country, honored Andrew D. Heineman, a 36-year trustee and its former Chairman of the Board at a black-tie gala on October 27, 2003 at The Pierre in New York.

Legendary cabaret star, the elegant pianist/singer Bobby Short serenaded the 400+ guests. Three-time Tony-award nominee, actress Tovah Feldshuh, who triumphantly returned to Broadway this fall in “Golda’s Balcony,” served as the evening’s elegant and humorous mistress of ceremonies. Proceeds from the gala tribute will support projects and programs that will improve the quality of life for 6,200 residents and clients of the Jewish Home's three campuses in Manhattan, Bronx, and Westchester and its Community Services division. The Jewish Home completed over 250,000 home visits to the elderly last year alone. Andrew D. Heineman has been a guiding spirit of the Jewish Home for decades.

As a young boy he was a frequent visitor to the Home – alongside his father, Bernard, a Trustee. In 1967, it was Andy’s turn to begin serving on the Board. During his tenure as Chairman (1992-1996), he spearheaded the Jewish Home’s first capital campaign, Fund our Future, raising more than $50 million in endowment. A partner with the firm Proskauer Rose LLP, Heineman has also been an active fundraiser for Williams College. He has further distinguished himself as a collector of antique and modern glass, an avid birder, a model ship collector and naval historian.

As a tribute to Andy’s generosity, a number of friends — including New York State Senator Suzi Oppenheimer and her husband Martin, Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals Judith Kaye, David Stern (NBA Commissioner), Douglas Heller (of the Heller Gallery), Louise and Edgar Cullman, Alan Jaffe (Chairman of Proskauer Rose LLP), Pat and John Klingenstein, Sharon and Fred Klingenstein, and Stephen M. Peck, among others – celebrated with him this evening. Ms. Feldshuh was accompanied by her 92-year old mother, Lillian.

The Jewish Home and Hospital Lifecare System serves more than 6,200 older adults daily through traditional long-term care, subacute care, rehabilitation services, community services and senior housing programs at its three campuses in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Westchester (www.jhha.org).
