The
Naval Order of the United States honors John F. Lehman |

John
F. Lehman, American historian and Statesman, was honored
with the Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Naval Literature
by the Naval Order of the United States for his book On Seas
of Glory. John Lehman is Chairman of J.F.Lehman & Company,
a private equity investment firm.

He was appointed
Secretary of the Navy by President Reagan in 1981
and served until 1987. During his tenure as Secretary of the Navy
Dr. Lehman was responsible for building a six hundred ship Navy,
establishing a strategy of maritime supremacy, and reforming ship
and aircraft procurement. He is also remembered in the United Kingdom
for initiating immediate and sustained support to the Royal Navy
during the Falklands War. He has served as staff member to Dr.
Henry Kissinger on the National Security Council. In December,
2002, Dr. Lehman was appointed to the National Commission to investigate
the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. Dr. Lehman
has written numerous books, including Command of the Seas, Making
War and On Seas of Glory. The latter prompting the award from the
Naval Order.

The
Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Naval Literature, given
annually since the 1990s, “will be made to an American author,
who by his published writings shall have made a substantial contribution
to the preservation of the history and traditions of the United States
Navy”. On Seas of Glory, Mr. Lehman’s book of
heroic men, great ships and epic battles of the American Navy is just
such a contribution to our American history.
The Naval Order is the oldest American hereditary exclusively naval
society. The Order is dedicated to the recording and preservation
of Naval History and through the fellowship of their members to advancing
the Order's unselfish service and worthy aims for the security and
enduring well-being of our country. Membership is available to any
United States citizen who has served or is serving as an officer or
enlisted member of the Navy, Marine Corps, the Coast Guard and any
other federal military maritime service of the United State. |
