Holiday season soon to allow for a breather

Holiday season with the let-up in galas and charity benefits saw a heavy schedule of private screenings for the latest films premiering or about to premiere.

Last week, The Week Magazine presented a special screening of “The Fog of War,” at the Asia Society. The film is director Errol Morris’ new documentary on Robert McNamara, with a score by Philip Glass. William Falk, Editor-in-Chief of The Week, introduced the film.

William Falk, Editor-in-Chief of The Week

The director describes his film as "a story of an American dreamer who rose from humble origins to the heights of political power. Mr. McNamara, chief executive of Ford before he joined the Kennedy Administration as Secretary of Defense, was both witness to and participant in many of the crucial events of the twentieth century: the crippling Depression of the 1930s, the industrialization of the war years; the development of a different kind of warfare based on air power and the creation of a new American meritocracy. He was also an idealist who saw his dreams and ideals challenged by the role he played in history."

At cocktails afterwards guests enjoyed hot toddies made with Glenfiddich single malt scotch. Ted Sorenson, a close adviser and speechwriter for John F. Kennedy, a man present at the creation so to speak, said he loved it — Georgette Mosbacher had a lot of "issues" which made the cocktail hour all the more interesting.

Mr. Falk, (who won a Pulitzer prize in 1991 as part of a team of reporters for Newsday) had interviewed McNamara for that paper in April 1995. In his introduction to the film he said "ultimately Robert McNamara was the most frustrating interview I have ever had."
