More than 1,000 people from the city's business community gathered at the Waldorf-Astoria to celebrate Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC programs that continue to transform the lives of thousands of New York's boy and girls.

The 24th annual Sidewalks of New York Awards dinner set a record raising $1.6 million — the largest amount ever raised for an event in BBBS of NYC's 99 + year history.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City began in 1904 as the first formalized mentoring program in the United States. Its case managers carefully screen adults who are interested in spending 6-10 hours a month with school-age children, primarily from single-parent families. Accepted volunteers are matched for a minimum period of one year. Parents and guardians are included in service delivery through orientation sessions, interviews and ongoing monitoring of the Big/Little relationship. On average, these relationships last three years, while their friendships often last a lifetime.
