Last Saturday WLIU 88.3 FM, the tri-state area’s leading promoter of jazz hosted their second annual WLIU Jazz Legends at the Wolffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack.

The Jazz on a summer’s evening honored six of the most respected talents in the jazz field – jazz saxophonist qand composer Gato Barbieri, the late saxophonist Bob Berg, Vibraphonist and composer Teddy Charles, vocalist Carla Cook, bassist Henry Grimes and vocalist Anita O’Day.

Cocktail hour jazz entertainment
More than 300 guests attended the event, which was co-chaired this year by Paola Bacchini, Pamela Fiori, April Riddle Gow, and Ginny Mancini, with chairmen emeriti Alexandra Penn, Ahmet Ertegun, and the vineyard’s owner, Christian Wölffer.

Cocktail hour started at 6:30 p.m., followed by a seated dinner. After desserts and awards at 8:30 p.m. there was music and dancing. The evening includes musical entertainment by the Henry Mancini Institute Alumni Big Band, conducted by Cecil Bridgewater. Catering was provided by Creative Edge. For the second year, Megna Glass of Sag Harbor designed and produced the crystal awards that were presented to each honoree.

WLIU broadcasts to nearly two million listeners across southern New England and most of Suffolk County around the clock, 365 days a year. WLIU's programming is simulcast on WCWP in Brookville, New York, reaching an additional 475,000 listeners on Nassau County's affluent "gold coast."

WLIU's format mixes jazz, news, and public radio entertainment. Locally-produced programs like "The Song is You" and "The Eclectic Café," both hosted by Bonnie Grice, "American Musical Theater with Lee Davis," and Ed German's "Urban Jazz Experience" and "Saturday Night Soul" garner strong loyalty. Just this year, News Director Jim Asendio and co-host Michael Mackey began broadcasting "The WLIU/WCWP Evening Report," a weeknight news magazine covering news and community information about its listening area.

WLIU is a member of National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Radio International (PRI), airing many of the nationally syndicated news, jazz and entertainment programs.

Long Island University has made a significant investment in the station by funding the station's state-of-the-art digital studios. The University has done so in the spirit of producing public radio that exemplifies the objectives of Long Island University in teaching, artistic creation, professional practice and public service.
