A couple of weeks ago, out in North Haven, the Eos Orchestra celebrated summer with a cocktail reception and a performance of Saint-Saëns’ masterwork Carnival of the Animals, written for two pianos and orchestra, with members of the Eos Orchestra, conducted by Jonathan Sheffer. The evening began at 6:30 with the performance at 7:30. Proceeds benefited Eos Orchestra’s concert season and education programs.

The Eos Orchestra on the concert stage and particularly in the framework of its subscription season, explores musical relationships through the music and culture of our time. Its concert presentations focus on innovative programming, the rediscovery of important neglected works of music and composers, and collaborations with other artistic disciplines.

Jonathan Sheffer founded and has led the Eos Orchestra for eight years, garnering both national and international recognition. He made his debut at the Spoleto Festival conducting the Juilliard Orchestra this summer, and was also a visiting artist/scholar at the American Academy in Rome. His recent guest conducting engagements include the Brooklyn Philharmonic, New World Symphony, Pacific Music Orchestra, Filharmonica di Roma and the American Ballet Theatre.

For the past two summer seasons, Mr. Sheffer has appeared at the Ravinia Festival with Eos. Last season, Mr. Sheffer made his conducting debut at the New York City Opera leading John Philip Sousa’s The Glass Blowers. He was recently appointed Artistic Director of Red, a new chamber orchestra in Cleveland.

A gala celebration was held in Bridgehampton to salute Ms. Adler, the ongoing success of the studio and to announce the recipients of the 2003 Stella Adler Studio of Acting Awards. An evening was co-hosted by Barbara and John Hearst and Roy Schieder and his wife Brenda Siemer, who welcomed a "Stella" roster of Stella's friends and supporters to the Hearst's wooded enclave for an evening of conversation, readings and music, celebrating the spirit of Stella and her legacy, The Stella Adler School of Acting.

The Adlers were a legendary theatrical family who influenced American theater for more than a century and four generations. The legacy continues with the Stella Adler Studio of Acting named for its late founder, whom many believe was the greatest acting teacher in the country.

Ellen Adler, vice-chairman of the acting studio announced the recipients of the prestigious Stella Adler Studio Of Acting Awards for 2003. The Jacob Adler Award For courageous contributions to American culture will be presented to Steven Spielberg.

The Group Theater Award for prolific achievement in theater, film and television will be presented to Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee.

The Stella Adler Award for consummate interpretation of the Stanislavski/Adler technique will be presented to John Travolta.

Roy Scheider, an alumni and co-chairman of the school, gave a short but powerful reading from the writings of Adler's late husband the esteemed drama critic, Harold Clurman, who with Adler, co-founded the ground breaking Group Theater. Phyllis Newman read one of Stella's famous letters to her students.
