The Whitney Museum of American Art's Art Party

Dear DPC: When asked to describe the Whitney party, a lesser woman might say "words fail me." I, however, will rise to the occasion - I'll say: "golly."

One of the guests, a man, came dressed as Queen Elizabeth I - but your readers will certainly long for a shot of his dress, hand-crafted from 2,004 Coca-Cola cans. When I asked if he'd actually drunk all the Coke, he looked at me as though I'd asked him for a kidney.

It was that kind of a party - I LOVED it.

Cheers,

Under the patronage of French Ambassador Jean-David Levitte and French Consul General Richard Duqué, the Pasteur Foundation held its gala – An Evening of Tango – on April 28, 2004 at the St. Regis Hotel in New York. Gala Chairmen François Bujon de l’Estang, Elizabeth Fondaras, and Agnès and Georges Hibon were delighted by the turnout of nearly 300 guests; the evening raised more than $500,000 for the Pasteur Foundation.

The foundation works to send talented American post-doctoral researchers to the Institut Pasteur laboratories in Paris for three-year fellowships. To date 15 fellowships have been created thanks to the generosity of American friends.

Two such friends – Anne Cox Chambers and Judith P. Sulzberger – were honored at the gala for their concern for and dedication to the advancement of the mission of the Institut Pasteur to improve global public health through research on infectious diseases. Michel Bon, Chairman of the Institut Pasteur, presented both honorees with their awards and, pronouncing them “truly pasteurized,” he gave them official laboratory coats. Ambassador Levitte then read each honoree personal letters of commendation from President Jacques Chirac.

With a brief tango lesson under their belts and a stunning performance by worldclass dancers Cecilia Saia and Ronen Khayat, guests took up the dance floor and … tangoed!
