Two weeks ago, the Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center presented their 2004 Awards For Excellence to three outstanding New Yorkers at a gala black-tie dinner dance at the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza.

Sidney Kimmel, Chairman of the Board and founder of Jones New York, received the Award for Excellence in Corporate Leadership for his commitment to supporting cancer research and the establishment of the Sidney Kimmel Prostate and Urologic cancer Center at MSKCC.

Through the Sidney Kimmel foundation, millions are donated each year to cancer research and prevention around the country.

Dr. Richard J. O’Reilly received the Award for Excellence in Medicine for his work as a world-renowned physician who established the MSKCC Bone Marrow Transplantation Program, now one of the world’s largest. Dr. Reilly is chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and Chief of the Bone Marrow Transplant Service. He has led many clinical trials designed to evaluate innovative therapies for childhood cancers.

Joy (Mrs. William) Ruane received the Award for Excellence in Philanthropy for devoting her time and resources to the Society’s patient care initiatives at the Center. As a member of the Administrative Board, she has been active on Society committees such as the Patient Environment Program (P.E.P), Social Service and Steps for Breath.

It was a beautiful Spring evening and fashion was out. Muffie Potter Aston was wearing a black and silver beaded gown by Badgely and Mischka. Karen LeFrak was in a black and shear lace illusion dress by Oscar de la Renta and her grandmother’s diamond necklace. Jessie Araskog was in a black evening tuxedo gown by Ungaro. Honorary co-chair Constance Casey wore a royal blue and black satin gown with organize sleeves. Joanne de Guardiola was in a pale blue Badgely Mischka sheath slit up the front with trailing blue ribbons. Jamee Gregory wore a soft green top and flower appliqued white satin skirt by Oscar.

Julia Koch’s dazzling black sheath with long floating ribbons was by Chanel. The co-chairs, Kitty Sherrill and Karen May were in chiffon by Michael Kors. Mrs. Ruane accepted her award in a strapless navy sheath with pink sequins over lace by Vicky Tiel, and the Society’s Coco Kopelman was in a violet gown by Chanel.

Ron Wendt did the tables – peach chiffon tablecloths ruffled with flower petals and decorated with vases of peonies, sweet pea and calla lilies. Stuart White’s band kept the dancers dancing

Annual Polaroid Benefit Auction for Free Arts NYC
and the WB11 Care for Kids Fund

For the past seven years, Free Arts NYC has been providing long-term, customized art programs to abused, neglected and at-risk children and their families throughout New York City. The lives of more than 19,000 children and their families have been enhanced by the volunteers serving as positive role models and artistic mentors.

A week ago, at the Phillips de Pury gallery at 450 West 15th Street, Free Arts NYC and WB11 Care for Kids Fund held a fundraiser chaired by Amy Sacco and Mary Alice Stephenson. Celebrities and artists received Polaroid cameras and film to donate an image to the benefit auction. There were cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and silent and live auctions as well as great music.

Women Who Care Luncheon to Benefit The United Cerebral Palsy

The United Cerebral Palsy held their third annual Women Who Care Luncheon, which celebrated women whose outstanding achievements have distinguished them in their professional and private lives.  Nearly 500 women turned out in New York City’s Tavern on the Green to help raise $300,000 for the United Cerebral Palsy.

Among the celebrity guests and award presenters were Diane Sawyer, Susan Lucci, Helen Gurley Brown, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Dayle Haddon, Deborah Roberts, Kathryn Chenault, Law and Order’s Epatha Merkeson, Miss U.S.A. Shandi Finnessey, Sports Illustrated model Audrey Quock of New York Model Management and Donna Hanover who was the emcee.

The Women Who Care honorees were Anne Sweeney, President, Disney-ABC Television and Co-Chairman, Media Networks, The Walt Disney Company; Regina Kulik Scully, Founder and CEO, Rpr Marketing Communications and  CareerPeeks Foundation and Saundra Parks, Chairman and Creative Director, Daily Blossom.  Special awards went to Susan Kaskel who received the Leulla Bennack Volunteer Award and Willie Mae Goodman was presented with the Karen Hansen Caregiver Award.

The Honorary Chair was Cathleen Black, President of Hearst Magazines.  Patricia Ganzi and Loreen Arbus were the event Co-Chairs. A silent auction was held in the Terrace Room and exciting prizes such as a men’s Rado diamond watch, first class round trip Continental Airlines tickets, trip to the Ritz Carlton in Palm Beach, Diane von Furstenberg luggage and a Gucci purse were stuffed into chic designer handbags by Konfetie.

Women Who Care was created to honor female role models representing various segments of the community and celebrates women who have blazed new paths and inspired others to achieve.  The mission of the UCP/NYC is to provide the highest quality services in health care, education, employment, housing, and technology resources that support people with cerebral palsy and related disabilities in leading independent and productive lives

Stairway to Doubles
Doubles, the chic private club in the Sherry Netherland Hotel on Fifth Avenue celebrated its 28th anniversary with a black-tie gala, dubbed Bubbles at Doubles. The club's guiding light Wendy Carduner filled the room with more than 2,800 fuchsia and metallic yellow balloons each with organza ribbons trimmed in blush or amber satin. Champagne corks popped, Gerard the chef served a mouth-watering dinner, and Peter Duchin and his band played for the 170 guests who danced tthe night away.
