Volunteers of America hosted its fourth annual Samba et Soleil benefit

New York’s famed Boat House in Central Park was transformed into a tropical paradise when Volunteers of America hosted its fourth annual Samba et Soleil benefit. Over 500 guests enjoyed delicious Brazilian cuisine and a variety of tropical drinks from Kuya Fusion Rum along with wines from William Hill Winery and beverages from Amstel Light.

Those seen under the palm trees included: Kylie Travis, Kristina Stewart, Elif and Gaetano Sallorenzo, Tatiana Papanicolaou and Nick Papanicolaou, Liz Blair Quinn, Vanessa Noel, Lulu de Kwiatkowski, Daria de Koning, Melinda and Charles Dubow, Carolina Zapf and John Josephson, Sue Hostetler and Jon Diamond, Lizzie and John Robertshaw, Melissa Cohn, Vickie and Alan Scheurer, Ian Spencer Bell, Hallie and Larry Nath, and Andrew Heiberger.

Partygoers danced to the sounds of Grupo Saviero, one of the area’s hottest Latin bands. Harvey S. Shipley Miller, Carolina Zapf and Melinda Ely Dubow served as co-chairs for the event. Manhattan Mortgage was the evening’s presenting sponsor with additional support from Equinox Fitness Clubs, Citi Habitats and the New York Times.

Proceeds from Samba et Soleil benefit Volunteers of America's efforts to combat homelessness and provide crucial services for people in need.

Hampton Designer Showhouse opening night gala preview

The Hampton Designer Showhouse opened with a gala preview party on Saturday June 26th with about thirty top interior, landscape and decorative designers contributing to a lavish shingle-style mansion, donated by Burns Development Corporation, located at 71 Town Line Road in Wainscott.

Mrs. Alessandro di Montezemolo is the Honorary Chair of the Showhouse. Charlotte Moss and Mildred Brinn were co-chairs and Mario Buatta was Honorary Gala Chair. This year’s Interior Designer’s chairman was Gary Crain, with Co-chair, Tom Fleming. Jack de Lashmet was Design Chair and Kay Gilman was Journal Chair; Mary Lynch is Showhouse manager.

This is the fourth year of the Showhouse which is presented by House & Garden magazine, Dominique Browning, editor-in-chief. Proceeds benefit Southampton Hospital. Last year’s showhouse had more than 10,000 visitors and raised more than $500,000 for the Hospital.

House & Garden was founded 103 years ago in 1901 by three architects as a trade journal which has now, under Dominique Browning’s editorial direction has morphed entirely into an authority on design and style with award-winning photography and journalistic excellence unmatched with its expertise and resources and nearly 5 million readers.

The Showhouse hours are Monday through Sunday 11 AM to 5 PM. Children under six, infants, strollers and pets are not allowed in the Showhouse. Admission is $30 and includes the Showhouse Journal. For more information you can call 631-537-6616.

It was a perfect summer night in East Hampton – glorious weather, grand setting, dinner, dancing … all breezily staged as though the hosts had just called and invited a few hundred to supper.

Andrew Gordon and Chris Browne graciously opened their spectacular Further Lane estate to the supporters of the Nature Conservancy. A fleet of golf carts carried guests through the privet to the cocktail tent at the northern end of a lily pond. Once inside, guests, including Barbara Hearst, David and Rusty Burr, Allen and Alice Ryan, Jonathan and Somers Farkas, Gretchen and Jim Johnson, Lisa and Brian McCarthy and event chair Ginny Schwerin nibbled caviar canapés before circumnavigating the pond to supper.

Inside tent #2, we were seated at orchid-topped tables and the Nature Conservancy got down to dinner and business. The skinny strip of land between Peconic Bay and the North Atlantic gets hotter and hotter every summer – and more and more crowded. The Conservancy works to maintain the Hamptons’ allure the natural way: its patrons buy big chunks of land and then donates them to the Conservancy with the proviso that they remain undeveloped. Anyone who has ever waited 20 minutes to cross the Montauk Highway on a Saturday will want to donate thru www.tnc.org.
