Ismail
told the audience of movers and shakers at Soho House “Satyajit
Ray is one of the masters of our time - his work connects the heart and the
minds. These films were made almost 60 years ago, but still have enormous
power. The characters are so rich and so beautiful.”
“Satyajit Ray gave us a guiding light in our lives - he has been our mentor.
He promoted the idea of young filmmakers coming into the foray. He is such
a humble man - his name is listed in the phonebook, unlike Martin Scorsese
and Francis
Ford Coppola! James [Ivory] called
him years ago, and told Ray ‘I
am a
student of film’ and Ray invited him for a cup of coffee in Calcutta.
Our relationship has gone on now for 42 years."
"The
power of cinema moves the minds and the hearts. I had never
seen a Ray film in India, until I came here to study at NYU.
I cried and said this
is the kind of film I want to do.
Among those riveted by Ismail and his favorite film at this powerful and moving
