Starkey Hearing Foundation raises $2.7 million at star-studded benefit with Guest of Honor Elton John

Half of Hollywood was in attendance a few weeks ago in Minneapolis for the "So the World May Hear" Awards Gala which featured a show-stopping performance by Elton John. The evening raised $2.7 million for the Starkey Hearing Foundation, which provides over 20,000 hearing aids a year to needy children.

Elton John, Sharon Osborne, Leslie Nielsen and Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman were all honored at the event for their significant contributions to humanity and their appreciation of the importance of helping to fix the "broken ears" of the world. The numerous stars in attendance included Lorraine Bracco who introduced Elton to the black-tie crowd, Robert Culp, Marlee Matlin, Peter Graves, Hugh O'Brian, Lou Ferrigno, Hall of Famer Bob Feller, George Kennedy, Hal Linden, Abby Dalton, Carol Connors, Diana Lund, Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Tice, the Gold Medal-winning U.S. Olympic Hockey Team and many more. Comedian Norm Crosby served as Master of Ceremonies and Gavin DeGraw and Nita Whitaker performed heartfelt renditions of songs written just for the Bill Austin and the "So the World May Hear" Gala.

Before sitting down at the piano, Elton gushed about all the stars in the audience ("Mickey Rooney looks younger than I do, which I hate"). He dedicated "Rocket Man" to the astronauts in attendance, including Scott Carpenter and Gordon Cooper. And he sang a very bluesy, Ray Charles-like rendition of "Happy Birthday" to Tani Austin, who with husband Bill, runs the Starkey Foundation and whose birthday was the same day as the SRO gala.

Elton explained that he had met Tani and Bill Austin, CEO of Starkey Laboratories, at Sharon Osborne's house. (Sharon said Bill got her husband, Ozzy, hearing aids so she can turn things down in the Osborne mansion.) Then the Austins went to Elton's house in England for a fundraiser for his AIDS Foundation. "When I found out what they did, I got here to Minneapolis as fast as I could," Elton said.

Elton was the high bidder of the evening donating $100,000 for the Starkey Foundation mission to Guatemala with Sharon Osborne a close second, contributing $75,000 for the upcoming Hearing Foundation mission to Mexico, where Starkey will provide free hearing aids to needy children, some who will be hearing for the very first time. The Austins and their contingent of Hear Now volunteers fly to as many third world countries they possibly can to "fix broken ears."
